I'm sorry, the Westburrow Church is sick and I can't even imagine what theyre planning for this but just as I am on the 2nd Amendment... the right to bear arms means the right to bear arms... and as I am on the 1st Amendment... the right to free speech is the right to free speech... The Constitution!!!

Most states have restricted the distance from a funeral protest can occur.
I think this is as much as we should do.

The Patriot riders say they will be there to protect the funerals.
Hard to yell louder then a dozen Harley's revving in salute to the fallen.

Law enforcement should make every effort to ticket vehicles that are illegally parked, and concerned citizens can illegally park behind legally parked vehicles to block them in, if they don't mind getting a ticket.

Our constitutional rights must mean something, we must protect them at all costs. Restricting only the extremes. In this instance, they can protest but must do so at a respectable distance.

I'd be shocked if it was only a dozen. At an event like Sandy Hook, I wouldn't be surprised if riders came in from at least 10 other states.

This is a good case for a baseball bat and educating people about jury nullification.

Remember that most of Westboro church is just one family & their true motive is winning lawsuits for CASH. They are a test of our resolve to uphold the Constitution, but by golly I'd take a bullet to save them just like I'd take a bullet for Obama. No matter how detestable the things they say, we have to protect the freedom of speech.

Our liberties mean nothing if they are not protected for the most despicable among us. The First Amendment was not drafted to protect speech that is popular and makes people feel good. That kind of speech isn't in jeopardy. The kind of speech that the First Amendment protects is, by its nature, the kind of speech that some people are going to find deeply offensive and even hurtful.

I was speaking of the application of corrective phrenology by concerned citizens.

Ah yes, the Phelps road lunatics plan yet another strike.
The supreme court already decided the matter of their right to speak freely as hate speech psychotic deviant individuals seeking to start a riot or inspire mayhem. It's all perfectly legal and permissible under the protection of the 1st amendment. (Snyder vs. Westboro)

Many in the Phelps family are attorneys, including freaky Fred himself. They know exactly what they're doing and how far they can legally push it.

The powers that be at the various locations they picket, which they forewarn on their own church website as to their schedule of appearances, should simply refuse to grant the permit these nuts require in order to converge on a funeral.

Freedom of speech, freedom to mourn without being verbally accosted.
But somehow Scalia and his happy robed crew didn't see it that way. Mores the pity.
Maybe this term when at least 3 of the Jurists are slated to retire from the bench we'll have more a more reasonable panel so that someone can try again.

I can relate to the feelings, the urge to violence, the rage that I feel when these Westboro folks dishonor our military fallen and in this case children. I get that. My feelings though are trumped by my love of and oath to the Constitution. I feel compelled to protect them (physically from harm they might use to score a lawsuit) even as I applaud those that intervene non-violently (the Patriot Guard Riders).

dies-l got it 100% right.

Free speech is already restricted. We have libel, slander, fightin' words, incitement, whatever the fancy name for "FIRE!" in a crowded theater is called, and all the wonderful intellectual property/classified information type deals. I don't think we need any more.

Let them have their view, heinous as it may be. If we suppress viewpoints we find distasteful just because we find them distasteful, then the next time there is a cultural shift the exact same thing can happen back to us.

No this is not a good reason for regulating free speech because if it was you would never get to hear about another reason.
Most of these westboro people are teetering on the edge of going on a gun rampage themselves.

Actually, they aren't. From what I've read up on them, the majority of them don't believe in any of that stuff. They basically do things like this to get attention and in the hopes of someone getting angry and touching them. At that point they sue for assault.

So, basically... they're trolling the victims and their supporters for money.

Behavior like that needs corrective phrenology.
