I carry while exercising whether it's hiking, biking, or jogging. A fanny pack will work for most pistols. I usually carry in a holster OWB (outside waist band) when jogging or hiking. Sometimes I use a Galco shoulder holster though. Just make sure if using a fanny pack that nothing can get in the triggerguard and cause and accidental discharge.

My biggest concern while exercising is dogs. Most of them won't do anything, but it only takes one time getting chewed on to ruin your day. There have been some pretty gruesome attacks by dogs in my area over the past year so I carry my gun whenever I'm outside my fenced in yard now.

I was pulled off my bicycle a couple of years ago by a large mixed-breed dog. No permanent injuries to me, but having my gun in a holster on my belt allowed me to get to it and deal with the dog very quickly. I don't think I could have gotten the gun out of a fanny pack fast enough to shoot while fighting off a dog that was intent on tearing me apart.

Good heavens ... I think you people need to run faster or pedal harder!
Hahahahaha !!!

I'm sympathetic to the problem of aggressive dogs - largely because the women in my family are really quite frightened by them. Fortunately where I live it is rare to see a pet running free.

You might also consider carrying a good strong stick. Any kind of walking stick would be effective. Dogs don't understand guns - but they often understand sticks very well. And also a can of mace or pepper spray. In fact, the pepper spray would probably be your very best option ... even better than a gun.

all the best,

As a woman, it can sometimes get a bit scary when walking/jogging alone, no matter where you are. So I think that we should all have some sort of plan to defend ourselves. I always carry a phone, flashlight and either pocket knife or screwdriver if I'm out somewhere secluded. You never know.

If it's a dog I'm worried about, we have rolled up a magazine and wrapped it in duct tape to carry with us. Haven't been attacked so far. lol

OC spray is the best option to use against dogs. I'm a LEO and have seen many other LEO's use a pistol to stop a dog. It is rarely a true fight stopper as dogs are extremely pain tolerant when in a high adrenaline state.

OC will almost stop the fight.

Agreed. I've had two occasions where a weapon was needed to stop a dog attack. In the first, I used a handgun. As was noted, dogs are amazingly resistant to pain. It took several shots. In the second, a pitbull was attacking my child. All I had was a USMC KaBar knife. That knife was actually a quicker fight stopper than the handgun had been.
I have to agree with the walking stick though. Dogs instinctively fear a human with a stick and they understand the actions of a human picking up a stone. I now carry a 1.25" diameter, metal capped walking stick on my walks. It's already at hand, so deployment is instant , if necessary.+CK+

This reminds me of a conversation that I did not partake in, but I heard of it later: A hiker came across a father on a trail who had his two children with him. The hiker warned him of bears in the area. The father said that he wasn't worried, as he had a large revolver in his backpack. The hiker asked the father "do you really think that you're going to have enough time to get into that pack pack before the bear descends upon your kids?" The father stood looking stunned.

I can't imagine trying to wrestle a pistol out of a fanny pack while being mauled by a large dog. It seems a large walking stick would be far more effective.

I grew up in Idaho as the stepson of a police officer and the son of a professional big game hunter. I served four years in the Navy and six years in the Army. I know guns. I'm very good with guns. I own quite a few guns(but never enough...LOL.) and view them as both tools and works of art. I have a carry pistol in my truck at all times, a home defense shotgun next to my bed, and an end times tactical weapon at the ready...

I don't jog; bad knee. But I do ride a mountain bike. It has a pack on it that contains a first aid kit, water, and a S&W MP40 Compact.

When I am in the woods gold panning or hiking, I carry the full-sized M&P40. When riding horses, I have a Cimarron Arms Peacekeeper(1873 Colt Peacemaker clone) in .45 Colt in a DeSantis holster on my side.

I used to deliver propane for Ferrelgas when in college in rural Idaho and encountered hundreds of dogs. I kept a bag of dog treats and a can of pepper spray in the truck at all times. I love dogs, and never had to use the pepper spray. Usually, tossing a couple of treats out the window of the truck before getting out calmed most aggressive canines.

However, I did encounter a pair of very scary and very cunning white German shepherds when I delivered to a place best described as a white supremacist compound in the woods.

I could not gain these dog's trust.

One would get my attention by barking and growling at me while the other would sneak up behind me to go for an attack on my legs. I ended up unleashing a torrent of liquid propane at them during one such maneuver that caused permanent nerve damage to the face of one of the dogs. I hated to do it, but they were unusually aggressive...

I'm a concealed carry instructor, so I usually have my P2000sk 9mm with me at all times.

Don't run anymore, only walk. And I usually am carrying. There are dogs on the route I walk, and a few pit bulls. I don't trust the pit bulls. IMO, it isn't whether they will become aggressive, but when. So I am ready at all times.

Now it takes lots of practice and it don't take bullets either and David took down Goliath with this same idea .
from a small rock to a ball bearing or a full sized arrow / bow fishing / hunting arrows. and a full set up is cheap. and you can also go fishing on your walk..

I run in the backwoods of Montana, and carry bear spray...bears are a real concern, as are mountain lions, but I think it's my best bet against dogs and other threats too.
We even get bears in Ontario, in eastern Canada! :)
