I do too, I'm glad he was more or less vindicated in the end but it sucks that a few his last years were taken up by that side show. He was a total scapegoat and maybe I'm getting too Steve Quayle here but his death coming to so soon after he was cleared is suspicious to me.

Cardinal Pell's death was certainly unexpected, but I doubt if there is anything suspicious about it. He was 81 and he'd had hip replacement surgery, which is a major operation (although allegedly less difficult than knee replacements from what I've heard around and about).

I was one of those who always thought he was innocent of the child abuse charges.

By his own admission, supporting pedophile priest Gordon Ridsdale was a "mistake". That particular photo would have irritated a lot of Australians.

Cardinal Pell was slammed for his decision to accompany Father Gerald Ridsdale, in sunglasses and white suit, to a Melbourne court where he was facing charges for multiple sex crimes against children in 1993.

Cardinal Pell has never shaken off the public’s perception of that choice, that for him and his church, priestly welfare comes before victims’ needs. Ridsdale was later convicted over 54 child sex abuse offences.

Cardinal Pell later said the decision to support Ridsdale was a “mistake”.

Anyway he's gone to a higher court now and in my opinion will behold the beatific vision sooner or later. Of course that's my opinion, but ...

PS - Cardinal Pell was a conservative but I never heard him publicly criticising Pope Francis.

I was not aware of Cardinal Pell's recent criticisms of Pope Francis until Michie posted the article above.

I'll wait and see what happens. Others have speculated that there might have been a conspiracy in Cardinal Pell's death.

I don't think so. I suppose I could take another line and say God removed him at his appointed hour.

Time will tell.
