CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As a software engineer, the very first time I heared the term "The internet of things", I felt a cold wind running down my spine.
The only thing I could think was "baaaaaaaad idea!!!!"
Being a software engineer, I understand how ridiculously unsafe software is. It doesn't matter what system you are talking about: windows, mac os, linux, chrome, solaris, android, ios, etc etc
ALL of them have holes. NONE are really safe.
If there is a technically savy person with the will to do it, that person WILL hack just about anything that is based on software.
I really don't like the direction that ICT is taking these last couple of years.
The advent of "the internet of things", "social" networks and a gps chip in everyone's pocket (the phone) is the most dangerous threat that a free democratic society has every faced. I kid you not.
I do not see this ending well.
I know what goes on behind the scenes of companies like facebook, google etc.
All that combined with the current trend of "everything needs to be 'smart'!!!" and I literally am somewhat disgusted with my field of expertise.
The car hacking example is scary, yes.
But honestly, it will get a lot worse.
Just wait another decade till the "smart house" is common place.
You will literally be able to commit a murder from a 1000 miles away behind your laptop. And you'ld never get caught, if you do it "correctly".
yes, I'm rather pessimistic about the future concerning this. The optimist in me hopes that common sense will prevail in the end... but I fear for it. The masses want their toys and don't care about the fact that in the process, they are also buying a tracking device and literally are handing over their lives to the companies behind those products.

I have remote cameras that work pretty good on my phone, but most of the "smart house" stuff they have a lot of problems with and it's often more trouble than it's worth.

I tend to agree with your overall assessment. If the governments and big banks cannot keep their data safe, the likelihood that average individuals can keep their information safe is zero.
The fact that computers and the internet have made their way into cars now only highlights the potential dangers.
