Ever hear the song "medication" from Modest Mouse? It starts out kind of slow, and the first time I heard it, I thought it remain so. But, all of a the music picks up and they begin singing "and I dont know" I guess it was pretty shocking. Then, at the end, it goes back to being slow. Its cool. its really not the most shocking song ever. but its the first one to come to mind.

Like Herod - Mogwai. The first time I listened to it I got qiute a shock! Their early stuff is well known for it's quite-loud motifs but I didn't know it at first. I was listening to this track and thinking to myself 'What's wrong with these people? Why's it gone so quiet?' so I turn the volume up a bit. Big mistake. ^_^

The first guitar crash comes in and I nearly have a heart attack, I am not kidding you. My mum comes running into the room shouting at me for playing music so loud and I've dropped the remote for the stereo under my bed in my state of cardiac arrest. I give up srabbling under the bed to find the remote and try and manually turn the volume down knocking over a pile of tapes and CDs in the process. Once the room has returned to relative quiet. By this point my brother is in the room laughing at me. he he
Is that the kind of shocking you were thinking of?

Almost every time I listen to one of the performances of "Deception of the Thrush" by ProjecKt 3 (a different line-up of King Crimson), I always get startled by the first vocals in the song, because the music is so quiet and the vocals are being filtered through this vocoder that's set to probably the maximum distortion level.

"please bleed" by Ben Harper. Not the album version, but whenever he plays it live, there is a certain part of the song where he stops singing, stops playing guitar, and for just a second he wails at the top of his lungs. On the "Live from Mars" cd, there is a good example of this.

when i first heard it, i was like "whoa.... did he mean to do that??" vocally, it sounds horrible.... his voice totally cracks... but i've come to like it... now i look forward to it, because it's such an emotional song, and i love how he gets into it.

if you can download "please bleed" by Ben Harper (the 'Live from Mars' version), you should, it's amazing.
