  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anyone else like to make candles? I like to make simple gel candles, and tonight I made a yellow pillar candle, and it's the first time I've really worked with traditional wax (unless you count the candles I dipped about three times at the pioneer exhibit at the State fair). I really loved making it, and I think that it turned out okay. I'm looking into making more candles to give as gifts and possibly sell.

What are your favorite type(s) of candles to make?
What type of wax do you use?
Do you know of any stores (physical or online) where I could find a good deal on suplies like molds?

I don't do candles, but I do make soaps. We use some of the same fragrances and molds.

Molds you can buy at any craft store, but if you want really nice ones I would check out eBay. Some of them are going to be a bit pricey. But then you want to stand out.

Check out your local craft fairs/ gift boutiques and also craft magazines for what is popular and then take a step in the same direction only different. IE if cats are popular run out and get a fancy cat mold that isn't like all of the others in your area.

I make candles. I use palm wax preferably or soy wax. There are a few local suppliers that I get my stuff at that have good prices. They are wholesale, however so I do buy in bulk.

Personally, I prefer fresh, outdoorsy type smells in the Spring/Summer and the bakery type smells in the Fall/Winter. I make container candles as well as votives. The nice molds I get from either The Chemistry Store or a local supplier. I save on shipping if I can get it locally. :)

Thanks everyone! I found a star shaped mold at Micheals the other day, and there and I found some cute molds on Yaley's website that I'm thinking about ordering. They have rabbits, cats, dolphins, and more, and the prices aren't too bad either.

I have a question about scents.

When my granddaughters and I were making soaps I bought a ton of different scents but the oils dissolved the printing. I can no longer tell what scent is what which makes it hard to recreate a batch.

Does anyone else have this problem? Are there certain brands that have better labels?

Hi all,
I just ordered a few of the latex molds from Yaleys. They have dicontinued them, so they are on sale for $1.75 a piece while they last! The only thing is if the order is under $50, they charge a 5 dollar handling free. But it's still a good price, considering plain metal molds run $15-&20 a piece at my local Micheals.
I got the large rabbit, a cat, a tudor rose pillar, and a couple of others.

I have a question about scents.

My suggestion is when you buy the scents, make a numbered list of them. Before you use them, get a permanent marker and mark the number on the bottom of the bottle. Then, if the labels come off, you can refer to the list.

Or you could try writing the name directly on the bottle with a marker.

I got my latex molds today! I really like the pillar and horse molds. The best thing about them is they can also be used for plaster casting, and painting is my other big hobby, so they are perfect.
I make both candles and soaps. Have been making soap for around 5-6 years, and candles for two years.
Enjoy doing both.
I make soap sometimes too. Your right, it is a lot of fun.
