Okay, I'm able to pray in tongues, etc. :) My main question as I have read around...

Are we able to speak in tongues whenever we want or only through the Holy Spirit's intervention?

I do understand the tongues that we pray in and stuff is due to the new birth, new spirit and through that it has a language of its own.

I don't mean for this thread to be a carry-on, annoying thread, just to find out how each of you believe on this matter.

1Cr 14:14For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

1Cr 14:15What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Here is an example of Paul saying what he will do. What he, chooses to do himself. This is your ablility from your re-created spirit. Your language is always there. You just pray in your spirits language any time you wish. Paul in this case never said when the Holy Spirit prompts me I will do it. He has that ablility in his own recreated spirit.

if you read Dids FAQ's thing, he talks about the difference between praying in tongues (which is between you & God) and giving a word of tongues (with interpretation, as a form of prophecy). You can pray whenever, you can only prophesy at the will of the Holy Spirit.

Brian, I nearly started a new tongues query thread last night and decided I wouldn't, but maybe I'll take courage now, (or maybe I'll hijack yours! LOL)

I believe you can pray in tongues whenever you desire.
Because if you have the desire in your spirit, it's God's Spirit who put it there, so pray it out!
If you don't have the desire, then pray another way, and ask Him to show you when to use which language.

God bless, love Susana

You can speak in tongues any time you want.
This is because when you pray in tongues, YOUR spirit prays.

1Co 14:14

(14) For if I am praying in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

What this is saying is that when you pray in tongues your spirit is bearing fruit as opposed to your mind.
The next verse has revelation:

1Co 14:15

(15) What then is it? I will pray with the spirit, but I will also pray with the mind; I will sing praises with the spirit, but I will also sing praises with the mind.

The same "will" that enables him to pray from his mind also enables him to pray and sing from his spirit. It is no harcder to pray in tongues than it is to pray with your mind. You can do it at will anytime you want. I do it constantly.

Paul also says he wants this for us also:

1Co 14:5

(5) Now I want you* all to be speaking with tongues, but more that you* shall be prophesying. For the one prophesying [is] greater than the one speaking with tongues, unless he interprets, so that the assembly receives edification.

Note that this also applies to prophesying. You can prophesy anytime you want to also.

1Co 14:32
(32) And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

Finally, understand that just as the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets, the spirits of the tongue speakers are subject to the tongue speakers. You can control when you do these things!

What you cannot do is manifest the Holy Spirit enabled "Diversities of tongues" any time you want. This is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit that is only given to certain members of the body for the good of the whole body. You cannot control this even if you have that gift. It is only by the will of the Holy Spirit.

I know that we can prophesy as well... but what gets me on that aspect is if we will to prophesy whenever we want (like the other day I prophesied to my friend Stephanie that she'll be saved by the end of 2005), what determines if that prophecy will come true?

God determines it. But make sure that the prophecy you give is given you by God. If it is not His word than He does not have to honor it.

This is a great misunderstanding.
Prophecy from the spirit of Christ in is never predictive. Our spirit does not have predictive abilities. That is the property of God and the Holy Spirit via the Word of Wisdom. We can all pray in tongues and prophecy, but we do not all have the Holy Spirit gift "word of wisdom".
What we do do, and it SOUNDS like prophecy is pronounce blessings.
We do have the ability to speak forth blessing upon people. Because a true blessing is spoken with "faith wording" it SOUNDS like a prophecy...

Example:
"You will go forth and speak the word of the Lord with confidenece and power"

It SOUNDS like a perdiction... but it is not. It is a prophetic blessing that must be recieved and believed by the hearer in order for it to come to pass. We see this happening all the time in the OT when the fathers would bless the children. If they believed, they would recieve. The same is actually true with the blessings and promises of God. God told the Jews the land belonged to them... but they never did actually possess the whole of it! Was this a false prophecy??? NO. It was an instance of a prophestic blessing (i.e. a "promise") that had to be believed before it would come to pass.
Timothy was a good example of this:

1Ti 1:18
(18) This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

2Ti 1:6
(6) Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

Here we see Timothy using the prophecies that he has received to war. Prophecies have to be used just as if they were the Word of God. You have to believe and confess them into reality.
