  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Great exercise for me   .
Very old form of greek, possibly immitating new testament greek, not only in words and syntax but also in literary motives, but written in 2003. Let's see...

This electronic edition of the ancient and Patriarchal (here : given by the Fathers), as well as Orthodox Text of the New Testament, is offered to every Christ-loving researcher and student / scholar, as an aid (to his studies) and for a saviour of spiritual fragrance (this one I copied directly from the liturgy); it is further dedicated to the holy memory of my parents Kyriakos and Vasileia, who brought me up in Christ.

I want you to know, dear reader, that, while I was dealing with this holy text as respectfully as possible, I was gladly labouring and putting excessive effort on it, comparing it to the written text and making corrections, two and three and even four times, chapter by chapter and verse by verse. Having gone through it several times, I used every method I could think of, in order to compile it (electronically) full and unchanged (with respect to the original). So I adjusted (? that's what he says!) the most complete and solid fonts to it, having selected them as if I was a bee (bees are very selective - this is a typical byzantine metaphor). Therefore, while you are following it, and in the unfortunate case that you find a little error in the punctuation, the accenting, or otherwise in the spelling, forgive my modest self, for such a thing is not deliberate but by mistake; correct it and let me know if you would.

 It gets tiring. I'll be back. I hope my almost word by word translation makes sense.

For I don't forget the Word of the Lord saying : "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book" (Rev 22-18) (I pasted the translation from a random site). It seems to me that He doesn't say that for the Revelation alone, but for the whole Scripture, Old and New Testament. Be aware that, even if a single comma or a full-stop is added, the whole meaning is often corrupted, and the text ends up signifying different things from those intended, and it also becomes vulnerable to misinterpretations. I further think that most herecies stem from such misinterpretations, thus corrupting our True Faith. As far as I'm concerned, I shall never stop checking and correcting it.

(now here comes a really really long sentence!) And when you have gone through this text fully, through the Gospels of Matthew and of Mark, of Luke and of John, together with the Acts of the Holy Apostles and the Epistles, and as a conclusion, in the form of an accomplishment, the Revelation of the Most Holy John, and having embraced the commandments and teachings therein, may you acknowledge the value of the New Testament of our Lord, and may you also joyfully choose the way of struggling for the virtues, while quickly rejecting the way of the evil. Behold, two thousand years already having passed since the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, our Greek fathers believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and got baptised in His name, receiving the grace of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, having kept the New Testament and the true faith, and having received the grace of the Holy Spirit Himself, we have and we will have to live and act and remain in Him (the Holy Spirit) (see Acts 17-28).

Thanks a lot everybody, but it's only my native language. The overwhelming majority of the words in there are still in use in one form or the other. Not to mention that a number of them somehow also appear in english. It would be a shame on me if I couldn't do it :D . The syntax looks a bit funny, but some 15 years ago in high school we translated Euripides which was much older and harder. One's native language + english (if they don't coincide!) is the norm nowadays, so it's not as impressive as you may think it is.

Sadly (and I include myself), this is impressive if you were educated in the USA.
