Can someone confirm this for me?

During an interview with Michelle Malkin, Maryland Senatorial candidate Michael Steele was discussing the racism thrown at him by Democrat operatives (the Sambo blackface picture, for example; he didn't say anything about cookies being thrown at him). He then mentioned an article in the October issue of Esquire, in which, in the very first paragraph, the writer describes Steele, Lynn Swann, and Ken Blackwell as the 'lawn jockeys' of the Republican Party.

Esquire isn't on my reading list, and I haven't seen a copy in a corner store yet to confirm this. The article is not linked on the Esquire website (or if it is, I haven't found it yet). I hadn't thought to check at the local library until just now, and I'm not sure they carry it anyway.

Has anyone seen this? It's last month's issue of Esquire. I really hope it's not true, but I see no reason to doubt Mr. Steele; it's easily checked by people who have the magazine or who can still see it in stores (if it hasn't been replaced by the November issue yet).

That is a good one. I will have to remember it. "'lawn jockeys' of the Republican Party"

Think his opponent, Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, made Democratic party history last week. He ducked a debate sponsored by the NAACP.

WAPO on the endorsement of Steele by Black leaders:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/05/AR2006110500986.html

Washington Times on Michael Mfume campaigning with Steele in downtown Baltimore:

Steele --with the help of the liberal establishment which dumped Kwesi Mfume for Cardin--certainly has shaken up the Democratic Party in Maryland

unless Steele wants get caught once again with a "he said/he said" fiasco like the oreo incident.

No "fiasco". Everyone knows what rhetoric is tossed at Blacks who confront the party. "Oreo" is not the worst.

This is like John Kerry. Everyone knows what he said. Everyone knows the names Steele is called. I don't care how much Media Matters and other "Center for American Progress" operations try to say otherwise. People aren't stupid.

Really Voegelin,

I kind of like Mike Steele, but when has avoiding the NAACP been a GOP concern?

You're funny.

Those aren't just any black leaders, they are from the same affluent Prince George County where Steele is from. Obviously concerned about their Bush tax loans that Steele has promised to maintian. (One of the issues I disagree with him about)

Washington Times on Michael Mfume campaigning with Steele in downtown Baltimore:

WashTimes......welp, moving on....but really big deal, if it were Kweisi Mfume still not a big deal.

If Maryland blacks think that Steele is really going to move on their behalf without regard to other issues, then by all means they should call his bluff and vote for him.

The incident is about some cookies being thrown at him. Please stay on track. Moreover, Steele is kind of moderate.

Do you even know what 'lawn jockeys' means? It's a racist insult akin to the word that rhymes with 'bigger.'

Here's a comment from a left-wing blog I found to show you what I'm talking about (the blog entry is referring to the Harold Ford TV ad with the 'call me' girl).

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2006/10/25/racism-in-tennessee-senat_n_32503.html
I hear Corker--no, make that PORKER--has a lawn jockey in his yard and a noose in his office. (Or was that George "Hillbilly Bear" Allen?)
More comments on the lawn jockey and its racial significance here.

Let me put it this way: why don't you tell someone like mhatten or hernyaccent or ShawnaAnn about how nice it is to call someone a 'lawn jockey.' Maybe then you'll learn something about how blacks feel about it.

Here you go: Esquire Oct 2006

I would think it probably true unless Steele wants get caught once again with a "he said/he said" fiasco like the oreo incident. However, if you do find it, please link it.
That's where I looked before, but thanks for the link. I couldn't find it on that website; that's why I asked about it last night.

I'm going to check at the local library to see if they carry it today.
