I think Katherine is right. The adult altar servers wear cassocks in my church when they are 'off-duty', even though they have not been tonsured or anything like that. (They wear something fancier when actually serving at the altar.)

Interesting. Off-duty I mean. As to being tonsured, they may well have been. I certainly was as an altarserver many years ago in the GOAA. Blessed to serve in the altar.

If said Cossack was in the clergy, then yes. About the riding side-saddle, that I'm not so sure.

But, the more important question is: "Was there being Cossack clergy in Nineteenth Century Russia?"
