Can one have conversations (via thought) with their "personal angel"?

Hi,
I have a question, I was taught that we all have a personal angel to guide us in our walk with Jesus. Almost all of my life my personal angel and I talk to eachother via non-verbal communication (thought) all the time. We talk more than I talk to others. This angel is kind loving and showing me ways to Lord and how to be Christ like. I talk to this angel about everything, but I never pray to him only to God. Just recently I was told that this angel is not real because there is no way this angel and I can have conversations like we do and be that close. After discovering this my heart has been broken and I feel so sick and abandon. I was told before, long ago by a Catholic, that having these conversations are very rare that God gave me a very special gift to be able to talk to this angel like I do and as frequent as I do. I was told not many people have this gift and they will think I am "wacked" for being able to have this gift of conversing with my angel and the angel talks back to me in thought.
Please share your thoughts. I feel so crushed by what others recently told me.

When I was becoming Orthodox (from protestantism, so, not leaving the Catholic Church or anything), and my priest was guiding as a catechumen, the first thing he told me was to memorize the prayer to my angel, he said "they [the angel] like that."

Obviously that's Orthodox, but I can't imagine that it's unCatholic to do this.

Hopefully others here (Catholics) respond to you more thoroughly than I can. In part, I posted here to "bump" this thread up.

A few other things to think about.

First of all, I am of the strong personal opinion that gifts like these are meant to be kept personal. When we talk to others about them, we risk throwing pearls to swine. People might try to "expain away" what you believe (like, you just have an over active mind) or might even try to exploit yoru gift. We can also fall into the temptation of trying to impress people. Please understand. I don't believe you are doing that at all. But, that can happen.

however, it is very very very important that anytime we think we have a gift that is out of the ordinary... supernatural so to speak, we need to talk to our spiritual father. Generally these are priests or perhaps nuns or monks. These people dedicate their lives to prayer and they have been trained on how to approach these issues.

At least in the Orthodox Church, it is never taken for granted that anything (from glowing to visions of Jesus or saints or weeping icons) is from God. Satan can look like the most beutiful angel (not to imply that your angel is satan). I am not trying to tell yo that what you experience is evil at all. i don't know. It sounds wonderful and it is good to ahve a relationship with your angel. But, without proper guidance something good can turn bad. It happens all the time.

i THINK this advice is catholic too, but I could be wrong, so I stand to be corrected if necessary.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I've heard of this happening with some saints and also with children, and personally I believe it can totally be real.. as has been mentioned it's important to talk to a priest/etc and also to keep in mind that demonic deception is real, and sometimes people have spiritual experiences from the enemy.. however, if this is leading you closer to God, and there are "good fruits", then I don't think there is any reason to worry also I agree with not telling this to many people, because (as you said in the OP) some won't believe you. Seriously don't worry about what people think (unless they have a good reason for what they're saying, or are your 'spiritual father') because there would always be people who criticize. I've shared some personal things with people in the past and was called "crazy" too, and actually I also felt crushed by that. But really, don't worry If God has blessed you in this way, that is wonderful, and btw I totally believe that we have guardian angels. I'd love to meet mine someday So..thank God for this gift and don't worry too much what people say. Above all, trust Him.

Well, maybe you should keep it private but I am glad you didn't. You are the first and only one to say you and your angel communicate. Wonderful, actually. Cause my Guardian Angel is off somewhere doing something. Not on the job. Or maybe asleep. I don't know. I only know that no matter how hard I try to communicate with my "angel", etc. there is complete total silence and nothing forthcoming either. Yes, I believe in G. Angels. Just that mine is not around or maybe at some Angel only bar.

I wish that I had your gift. Continue is my advice. Give thanks to God!

You definitely have one Tigg. I don't hear mine in any way. But I speak to him every night and morning because we all have a guardian angel. Sometimes it isn't necessary that the communication be both ways. His job to protect you from demons and anything else bad that isn't according to God's will. But, we are supposed to thank them and ask for their protection. Someone here already posted a nice prayer. I would suggest using that daily and nightly. It may not ever open up two way communication, but as my priest told me, "they like that."

Hi there I finally made it back here. I am really glad you have told to a priest about it. You might want to consider seeking out a good spiritual director. Pray about it to the Holy Spirit and you will be directed to who you need to have at this time. Keep in mind a Spiritual Director must meet certain qualifications (many of them take classes to be spiritual directors), and not every Priest is a spiritual director. Confessor yes, but not all are called to what you might specifically need guidance in.

I have kind of three. One whom I see every month whom is a gifted Priest, another whom I have seen but no longer do because of her health is a Nun whom is also spiritually gifted, and the other is a good friend, who is a Spiritual Director (not mine personally), but we find that in many of our conversations she is doing just that.

If you are having these kinds of encounters, you must seek out someone who understands them, and can help you with them. I think you should start to keep a journal.

I have had many experiences with the Angels over the years, as well as my daughter (she has had encounters since she started to talk and could tell me about them). I have documented encounters in my journals for many years now.

There is story after story of how the angels have interacted, protected, and helped us in other ways, in both mine and my daughters life.

It really is not something you run out and tell the world either. People can be vary harsh in their judgment. But be comforted, it is only because others fear that which they don't know, and is not happening to them.

No one can really say why this occurs to some of us and not the rest of the world. Only God knows. Heck, I used to think when I was a little girl that this was normal, and everyone was just like me.

It wasn't until I was a teenager that I realized I was a tad odd (when I started to get ridiculed about it). It was because this was not what people perceived to be as the norm. But it was to me, my first encounter that I can remember was at age 7.

Remember too, that satan is the king of trickery. And that there are both good loving angels and dark demonic angels. And when you are gifted by the Holy Spirit in this area, you may encounter both. (chances are probable).

I am going out on a limb here talking about this to you. As I try my best to walk in obedience to my Priest, and he has not allowed me to openly discuss (in public as apposed to private) many things. This is why it is so important for you to find a good spiritual director.

So yes, you can certainly talk to Angels! Absolutely, and don't accept anyone telling you different!

I am really quite secular in my attitude, not very accepting of the supernatural at all really. My Catholicism is sometimes a hypocrisy actually, and the only thing that keeps me in is the fact that athiesm would be a hyocrisy for me too, and a very poor fit for where my values actually lay anyways.

What I am saying is that maybe there would be times when I myself, in more cynical moods, would have been among those who scoffed at your belief in angels.

But if I am really honest about looking at my life, I know that there is one incident, two really, where the best explanation for why I am still alive and well is that I had a guardian angel deliver me.
I don't really even like turning to the supernatural to explain events, but sometimes it is the explanation that bet fits with the facts.

Ah the chaplet of the Angels, someone once encouraged me to start saying it in the am daily when it comes on EWTN with Mother Angelica. Hum, you think I am being prompted here! Angels at work? I think I better get my hiney moving on this one. He He.

In our prayer Chapel here there are prayers to the Arch Angels as well.

By the way Joab, peps will think we are both schizophrenic now. I asked my Guardian what it wanted me to call it, and she told me Isabella. When I was told that, I said you've got to be kidding. And no she wasn't. I was sure that I had a huge male type Guardian. LOL (I know I have St. Michael too, as we all do, and he is right on it sometimes without me even asking).

I won't talk about the physical encounters I have had with Angels, but I can talk about how they have helped me, directed me, assured and comforted me.

I will tell you how they show me daily, to trust in God. Years ago I was told that God our father will always take care of me, no matter what. That he will provide me with everything I need (note I did not say want). He will always provide financially for my daughter and I. We will never go without a roof over our heads, clothes or food. And I will always have a means to pay for what I need.

I was also told that I must do everything humanly possible to achieve this, and then when I do give it over to God, knowing that he will always show me a way or just provide it.

He promised to send his Angels to give me little assurances that he was always there and keeping to his promise to me.

Throughout the years, they have never failed to remind me. No matter where I walk, (almost daily this happens), I find change on the ground. Whenever I am upset about finances I find more change. Do you know what it says on the pennies (and other currency)? IN GOD WE TRUST! So I immediately thank God and his messengers, the lovely angels that come to remind me. Then I repeat many times to myself (well sometimes out loud too) In God I trust, In God I trust, In God I trust.

Gee wiz, you would think by now that I wouldn't have to be reminded so much. But like I said before, I try my best, am a weak human, and almost always try to take matters into my own hands.

Whenever I am upset and need comfort. They send feathers. One time I was getting in my car to drive off, and was extremely upset, when I opened my car door there was a feather sitting on the drivers seat. (No, the windows were not rolled down). I just cried, and thanked God and the Angels. I used to save the feathers. Haven't a clue what happened to them all. They got lost when I moved.

We all have guardian angels and if you are blessed with the gift so as to recognize your angels voice, thank the Lord for this gift, for indeed it is a very rare gift. I know of another person (who is a mystic), who not only has conversations with her guardian angel, but can see her angel and the guardian angels of other people. The Lord has given you this gift to aid you in your journey towards holiness, and to also help other people in their journey as well. Do not waste this gift, but pray to the Lord to show you how this gift might be used for His honor and glory, according to God's will.

When my oldest two were teenagers I used to dispatch my guardian angel to them if they were driving in bad weather late at night, etc.

I suppose that if I had a child in Iraq I'd have to pack my guardian angel a suitcase so that he'd go on a one year tour of duty.

There were just times when I felt that my kids needed more than one angel looking out for them (and I feel that way about my current teen, too) and that the best thing my guardian angel could do for my peace of mind was double-team my teen...

Did he really leave? I'm not sure, but it did give me peace of mind.

LOL. Pack a suitcase huh? Thats cute. I am sure you are right and we all need extra Angels from time to time, many times I call on the legions of angels to intercede.

My bf often sends his angels to guard and protect me and my home. He just did this the other night. (and having to guard and protect his butt, they are pretty strong. He He. Just kidding) Have to add my humor in it. He is a gem of a man, a fantastic fella, who always looks out for the best interest of me and my eternal soul.

My wife has sent her angel on missions to sick children or to non-christian friends or family who are in trouble. I don't know if the angel listens (or folllows the request) but at the very least it will be reieved by God as a special prayer and sureely He respons as He sees most fit.

i too had angels keep me from death. once while driving with my family on the expressway from florida to illinois i fell asleep and woke up on the other side of the expressway with a semi coming straight at me. We actually crashed into a bridge and all walked out of it without a scratch. Right before the impact i seen a huge light circling the car and heard wings flapping and i KNEW that a bunch of angels were surrounding the car, i heard them. Anyhoo...when the police got to the scene they were in utter shock that we were all ok and not even hurt..they said we have seen this same accident before and there is always someone DEAD and the others critical condition. Our car was totalled, smashed to smithereens and the windsheild was shattered all over our laps yet not one of us even had blood or anything on us. it was amazing. And ..no i dont share this story too often because people would think me crazy.

I can relate to the light, and for sure the guy coming after me knew that
he was up against something very different too.

Anyways, it is not something that I am ready to talk about much.
