If anyone wants an easy overview of Beth's manner of teaching, watch "life today with James Robison" tomorrow on TBN or other religious station. She is on their show on Wednesdays doing a women's bible study. She speaks a lot on Grace to live holy, emotional healing, and growing closer to God
I was extremely disappointed when I went to NPH bookstore in Milwaukee and the first face I saw on the shelves was Joyce Meyer. I brought it up with one of the publishers at NPH and he said he didn't like it either but "you do what you gotta do to be the biggest Christian book store in town". This was some years ago so I don't know what it's like today.
Joyce Meyer cannot be found at NPH at all, period. I've actually blocked people from my FB feed because they post Joyce Meyer crap or inspirational stuff from the biggest charlatan of them all, Joel Osteen.
The publisher's response is interesting, since the purpose of NPH isn't to be the biggest Christian book store in town. It never has been.
I've found some stuff outside of WELS at NPH, but it's all pastor-reviewed and deemed acceptable. I firmly believe there's a lot of people out there who are Lutheran but don't know it...

I work in a nursing home in the evenings. Some folks watch EWTN and some watch TBN. The TBN prosperity drivel literally makes me cringe at times. Moore may not be Pentecostal, but she is certainly in the Prosperity camp.
And yes, IP, I've heard women in my church talking about their wonderful Beth Moore books they're reading. Makes me sad. My wife has started attending a study with our vicar's wife leading. I'm glad to see that at least the younger women are interested in solid Lutheran teaching. Interestingly, quite a few of then were not raised Lutheran, including the vicar's wife. Yay for convert zeal.
We must be very careful when listening to a teacher. Beth Moore, in my opinion, is not to be trusted to properly teach from the word of God. She is leading many astray with her approval of contemplative prayer, personal revelations, and faulty biblical exegesis. Yes, I know that many claim to have been helped by her. That is fine, but the experience of feeling helped is not where truth lies. Rather, it is God's word that is the standard of what is good and bad, not if we are helped through the wolf of pop psychology in Christian terminology. Therefore, I cannot endorse Beth Moore.
"My pastor hubby would have a huge issue if he found out any of our women were going to community bible studies."
Do you know how bad that sounds? Are you in a cult?

WEll, hubby reviewed the materials. He said they could do it if only he was leading it. He went on to express his concerns over the materials and suggested other books that would be better to start off with instead of James. I know he would have had to cut some out or have discussions on how it would be better to state something a bit differently.
Well, between the concerns I expressed at last month's meeting and the concerns he expressed in the email to the President, she got to looking around on the CPH website for some materials.
They decided to do the series on women of the Bible from CPH which includes books and videos.
I didn't go to the meeting today, but hubby said that the Beth Moore study was not brought up at all.
Thanks be to God for showing the women another study to use.
