  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can generational curses be broken?

I had always felt my life been cursed. My parents got separated when I was little because my dad was cheating. I grew up with my mom and she worked most of the time. We use to go to church but not very often. When I was a teenager I did alot of things that I regret and went thru lots of trouble times. All of my 5 sister and brother had bad relationships with their partners including me. I'm now 28 years old and I just barely started attending church last year and got baptize. I love it! I wish I would've done this long time ago. I had recently found out that my mom used to visit those ladies that practice magic. I don't know if it's true but I know is a sin. I was wondering if that could be a possible reason why we had this life. Also because my dad had many woman in his life. I don't want any curse on my daugther. We both go to church and believe in God. I see alot of things differently and I want to raise my daugther right.

Don’t worship or serve idols of any kind, because I am the Lord your God. I hate for my people to worship other gods. People who sin against me become my enemies. And I will punish them, and their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren. But I will be very kind to people who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations!
Deuteronomy 5:9

Generational curses don't exist. Just keep on following God and raising your daughter right.

"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." ~ Ephesians 2:4-10

Yes. Bible says God may continue curses to 3rd and 4th generations

People like to quote Deuteronomy 5:8-10: "You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."

But that's not about "generational curses." That's about the fact that sin in the parents often helps cause sin in the children (for example, the incest in David's family would not have happened if he hadn't committed adultery with Bathsheba).

And this is a commandment with a rich promise in it: "showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."

That's what a generational curse is... is it not?

Which scripture references your current situation?

Also because my dad had many woman in his life. I don't want any curse on my daugther. We both go to church and believe in God. I see alot of things differently and I want to raise my daugther right.

If you truly have no desire to partake of the witchcraft of your lineage, then I believe God will recognize that in you and help you.

Now, I am no psychology major, but what happened to you was no curse.

When you were a kid, your parents were your view into what a relationship was like. Whether you hated it or not, that was your daily view. When your father left, you and your siblings no longer had that essential father figure, which studys are now proving is CRUCIAL to childhood development.

The reason why you werent through so much trouble in your teens is because you lacked that solid father figure. Statistics have shown that children who grew up without a father are far more likely to commit crimes and violence than children who grew up with a father.

The reason why you and your siblings had bad relationships, is also most likely due to what you saw from your parents. The way our parents are in front of us, becomes ingrained into our subconscience and becomes how we view relationships. Studys show that there is a cycle in regards to bad or abusive relationships from parents to children. Aka, if the parents have a bad relationship, chances are the children will end up in similar relationships.

To calm your worry, if you are in a steady relationship, and it is a healthy one, then your daughter will see that and probably mimic it when she gets older. She will more than likely base her future husband off of you. And this is a good thing, because if you constantly show what it means to be a true man in a relationship, then your daughter will go for a man who also lives up to that standard.

Generational curses exist in a sense with genetic flaws within families. We all have them, to some degree or another. This is a scientific fact of modern medicine. However, I doubt that the typical type of curse exists at all, and if it does, I cannot imagine that it would extend to children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

There is the fact that God can decree certain paths are not open to a certain line of people. There are biblical examples of this. But that says nothing about the individuals in that line being unable to come to Him and lead Godly lives.

There is the fact that bad examples can cause bad results in following generations. We mortals are stuck with providing the best counter-example we can to the sins of others to our children. Ultimately, God always has a path out of temptation for every human. Every Christian parent learns to pray for their kids.

I had always felt my life been cursed.
There is freedom in Christ. There is no curse that is equal to the power in His shed blood.

Yes, strongholds can be passed down through the generations. It is clear that things like divorce can affect children for life, and even their children. And it is very probable, AISI, that these things can even affect DNA. But as you quoted, the same verse that speaks of generational curses speaks also of much greater generational blessings.

The difference lies in what we decide to walk in. If we walk in the curse we will be subject to it. And this is the default action, even if we're unaware of the curse. But if we turn to the Lord, the curse is overridden. The Proverb comes into effect: A curse undeserved will not alight (Prv 26.2).

The thing to do is two-fold. Renounce the works of darkness, and any hold they may have on you, hidden or evident, and then set full sail to follow after the Lord. This is what James 4.7 alludes to when he says, Submit to God; Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

I would recommend studying carefully the book of Ephesians, chapters 1 and 6, which speak of our high position in Christ Jesus, and our spiritual armament. Also see 2Cor 3. And the book of Galatians is all about our freedom in Christ, from legalism, curses and condemnation.
