Can Christians not Sin?

That is the question.

I have been discussing with somone the topic of Sin. And I have to ask this question. Can a Christian (one who accepts Christ as his savior) sin?

The person that I am talking with states that since we are under grace, that we are capable of doing what ever we want because we no longer are subject to any penalties. I have a hard time thinking that Christians can willfully choose to sin under the banner of Grace without ever repenting and turning from that sin.

What are your thoughts and opinions.

Of course a christian is able to sin. John recognizes this fact (1 John 2:1); and personal experience should answer the question to one's satisfaction. But, even though the christian is capable of sinning, he is also able not to sin (Gal. 5:16).

I disagree with the opinion there is no penalty for the christian who chooses to live or remain in sin. Though I believe a christian's salvation is secure, the loss of fellowship with the Father is a great penalty indeed, (not to mention the natural physical results).

I'm assuming they follow the OSAS theory? Catholics believe you can sin and still be saved, however we also believe that nothing sinful or less than perfect can enter the gates of Heaven; this is where purgatory comes in. Purgatory is simply the time that you are cleansed from all your sins, once and for all, before you are brought into Heaven. -- I have no idea how this is done, but I do believe that there will be some kind of pain or discomfort involved (afterall, it's the time you pay for your sins). Maybe it's being able to see and truely realize what Heaven is, yet not being able to enter it yet.

Is it possible for the Holy Spirit to entirely sanctify you so that for one brief instant in time you are completely holy and without sin?

If we can imagine that it would be possible to be without sin for one instant, can we imagine two instants? Can we then imagine those two instants to be right in a row? Can we imagine a third instant? a fourth? a fifth? and so on? And can we imagine that those instants were all strung together so that instead of an instant we are granted a single second of complete holiness?

And, once given a second...can we imagine two? or three? and can we imagine that those seconds might be strung together so that we were experiencing greater periods of complete surrender to God's will in our lives?

Oh, that the Holy Spirit would continually baptize us with fire, cleansing us from sin and purifying us so that we might experience more and more of those instants, seconds, and minutes of complete holiness.

Romans 6:1 - What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

Of course Chrisians still sin. But God Himself no longer views us as sinners.
However, this doesn't give us license to continue "in sin".

Read Romans 6 all the way through first.

Look at sin like this:

Before you were saved:
You were a tree that bore bad fruit and the core roots of the whole of that tree was bad.
When God Chooses you for salvation:
The old tree was uprooted in its entirety and thrown into the fire. God then plants a new seed in its place. He plants the seed of the Holy Spirit inside the tree at the root. As the tree grows up, it still desires to bear bad fruit, but God in his mercy has created you for good fruit. It is almost like you were planted in the same ground as you were uprooted from. You no longer have a fowl root, but the ground that you get put back in is fowl. You desire to bear good fruit, but sometimes the very ground that you are in is only good for bearing bad fruit. God in his grace will move you to fertile soil where you will produce good fruit. He will shake what must be shaken and prune what must be pruned, but at the end, the fruit you bear will be served to a hungry and dying world. So do you sin? I don't know, but I know that God looks at you and sees his son, who is blameless, because we are hidden in christ. So do you think it matters if we sin? No Should you Sin? No When we act as if we are still our old self, than we just need to go through Jesus to get to the father and ask for repentance. Repentance is a key. We are a door. If we unlock and open the door, we will find unmerited grace and favor.

I see where you get this question from 1 John 3:9

But you need to take this verse in context with 1 john 1:8-10\

so then this verse is talking about sinning as a way of life continuelly
