i was just wondering because i have been catholic all my life, and i speak in tounges sometimes when i pray, is it normal for the catholics to be blessed in this way of the spirit....

i have gone to other christian groups and they have recieved word from The Holy Spirit and i know it is true because it was about me, and i was just wondering if that was something that could enter into the catholic faith and help the priests in their holy ways...

amen..

You will find All the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Catholic Church. Mt wife has the Gift of Healing and I have the Gift of prophecy.

Through out the world today, God is working miracles through us and His Church.

Have these 'gifts' been independently verified..?

I speak in Tongues as well, or at least pray. I do it in private unless I am at a CCR (Catholic Charismatic Meeting) where someone has a Gift to interpret.

When the Apostles were given the gift of tongues, they didn't have interpreters.. that was the entire point. Everyone understood what they were saying because they heard the words in their own tongue.

For example, it would be like an Italian reciting Danté and a Bavarian hearing it with perfect accent and idiom of his native German.

I don't know what is spoken at most of these Charismatic meetings, but it's not the gift of tongues.

Sorry folks but this is an alien concept to me. What is the Vatican's teaching on it..?

There have been Apostolic Letters from the last three Popes approving of it and stating it should be guided.

The CCR we attend is guided by a priest.

These are the same Gifts that scripture speaks of and the Church has always sought.

There are several forms of Tongues. The CCC touches on it.

Speaking in tongues is for oneself and should never be done publicly unless there is someone to interpret. The other gifts of the Holy Spirit are more valuable and the most of all is love.

I found that there are those who become puffed with pride because of tongues and use it as a litmus test. And then there was the lady who declared that diabetes and other diseases was actually Satan within. Whoa! Wrong. One must be careful. Wise to be under a Priest as Jack is. The Holy Spirit moves and gives as He will and many receive His gifts. I believe there are more gifts than just those mentioned in the bible. Teaching for instance, empathy, caring for others (falls under love perhaps) etc.

I never judge if someone is close to God or "has it" by the gift of tongues. Just imo. (Speaking in tongues and then going home to rant and rave over sumting your kids did or curse out wife/husband is so wrong. Ya get my meaning hopefully.)

The gift of speaking in tongues refers to the Holy Spirit giving the Apostles the ability to speak other languages such as Latin, Greek, etc. This allows Saint Peter to fully communicate with the population of Rome without having to have an interpreter. Likewise when Apostles went to other parts of the world.

The "speaking in tongues" that we see today in some Protestant churches, especially Pentecostal churches, and in the "Charismatic" Catholic groups is not the same thing. When they start speaking in tongues you will not see them start speaking an actual forgien langage, rather it will be nothing more than a lot of different sounds that cannot be understood any anyone.

The so-called "Speaking in Tongues" we see today is a prime example of how Protestants will take something Biblical, completely remove it from it's original context, and then twist it into something that fits their heresy church. In this context speaking in tougues is little more than an emotional high where people work themselves into a frenzy, often dancing, yelling, and waving their arms around. It is not uncommon to see someone pass out during these frenzies.

Yes, Popes have allow it. But let us call it what it is...BS! It absolutely was not part of the Catholic Church. It is a simple case of mis-guilded Catholics borrowing un-Biblical stuff from Protestants who don't consider Catholics to be Christians.

That was my understanding of both the Apostles speaking in tongues (actual languages) and the garbled, incomprehendable stuff we see in some Protestant circles.

I had no idea it was practiced in Catholicism and I must admit it troubles me...

as there are many different gifts of tongues as we see in scripture, they are declared a sign of a believer in Saint Mark 16:17 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

no doubt you have been soured to the gifts of tongues by the many abuses we see all over the place whether on TV, or some fancy dressed TBN guy starts unbiblically using what he is calling tongues (who knows if it is or not God knows) either way it is done unbiblically, not adhering to what we see taught by the apostle Paul. I have to tell you if you have ever been in the presence where the gifts of the Holy Spirit are being used correctly and biblically as seen in scripture, you would not be so quick to throw the baby out with the bath water........but as we see today 90% of most denominations using the gifts are not keeping in line with what is taught..............from a couple of your post I kinda get the impression that your under the understanding that the apostles speaking in tongues were preaching the gospel in the language of the people present, look for your self on this issue, the people heard the apostles in their own language declare the wonderful works of God,(see Acts 2:11 this language is always glorifying God, whether known or unknown. nobody present heard the gospel in their language and was saved......we know this by those present who responded "whatever could this mean" (Acts 2:12) the response of Peter is fulfilment of the prophet Joel 28 “And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
30 I will show wonders in the heavens
and on the earth,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.
32 And everyone who calls
on the name of the LORD will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance,
as the LORD has said,
even among the survivors
whom the LORD calls...............................................Now then.......you need to only ask yourself one question are we in the Last days even more so today then when Peter said this is the fulfilment of prophesy

So, what did you forsee..?

Do we have anything in writing from the Vatican on these practices..?

It does not necessarily work that way. Prophets are those that hear God. It does not mean I can foresee the future.

Let me reassure you about these Gifts by using Church documents:

Catholic Dictionary:

Is there a dictionary used by these interpretors..?

EWTN has a web page that helps explain this movement in the Church, it is an approved movement as well.

Link: Charismatic Renewal - In General

After that here is another:
