  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can algorithms tell us who wrote the Bible?

In over 3500 years nothing has ever been disproved in the Bible. Why would anyone be able to come up with anything now after all those years?

Hard to prove a negative.

Other holy texts haven't been completely disproven either, but you don't believe in them, do you? You can't disprove that I wasn't abducted by aliens last night either.

Of course actually supporting certain biblical claims with objective evidence, is a completely different story.

There's nothing deeply unconvincing about astronomy

You'll have to convince me that you understand the topics before I could seriously consider you being able to debate me, as according to the formals in logic and law, there can be no debate if one does not acknowledge the principles

Feel free to " debunk me " on my own thread :p

I love it when people jump the gun

"Well, the numbers in the last book of the Bible { 144,000 and 666 } are taken from a set of calculations for these astronomical events"

That is not astronomy. That is just an assertion with nothing to back it up.

The Bible is a collection of writings claimed to have been inspired by a supernatural being, texts laying down certain moral principles to be followed. It also contains some smattering of history, but this as more of an afterthought.

What kind of "objective evidence" would, if found in the Bible, prove this claim true? Were you hoping to find an accurate prediction of who will win the 2016 World Series perhaps?

The bible is the claim, the objective evidence to verify the claims are likely to be true, would be found outside of the bible.

It is scarcely an afterthought. The defining characteristic of Judaism and Christianity is that God is understood primarily in terms of his activity in history.

Such as what, exactly? If, for example, the Bible predicted that Jews would eventually return to Israel, is the existence of a modern Jewish state in Israel incontrovertible proof of the authenticity of said book?

No.

If 30 years ago, I wrote a book on diet and exercise, based on claims of how to properly use diet and exercise, that had no objective support, besides my personal opinion and I predicted in that book, that the obesity rate would rise dramatically in the next 30 years, it would not mean the rest of what I wrote in the book, to be accurate and or reliable.

Claims are taken, one at a time.

I am beginning to wonder if some of what we use to know about the Bible has been lost.
For sure. The scribes who pieced it together don't seem to have been big fans of writing editor's notes, unfortunately. ^_^ This sort of analysis is really the only way to deduce how many sources went into any given book, and technology is making that process more efficient.

It really has a lot less to do with predictable then unprecedented. In fact the Hebrew people being scattered for 2,000 years and then to be gathered with the degree of genetic purity they have defies explanation according to the theory of evolution. They should have blended into the nations they were scattered to and their genetic purity should have disappeared a long time ago. But by all means give me the evolutionary theory that would predict that they would be scattered and then regathered 2,000 years later. Show me your science that explains all of this away.

Where does the Bible predict this. I am aware of Daniels 70th week, but that is not something that is not plain for people that do not have the Holy Spirit to understand.

It has got nothing to do with Evolution. For most of the previous two millennia Jews were a persecuted minority, and it was only the Nazi atrocities which finally brought that to an end. It is not exactly likely that there would have been much interbreeding with the persecuting majority.

So basically what you are saying is that no evidence of any kind would be sufficient to prove to you that the Bible were true, but you still have the nerve to demand evidence.

Yeah, first round deadlines have passed (including interviews), and second round deadlines aren't till January. So basically there's a lull in the frenzy to study an MBA at a top 10 school in the USA.

So I have time to criticize what passes for logic around here.
