When I was in High School (50 years ago) we had Encyclopedias. We were told we could not copy information out of that. But I took the information and rewrote it in my own words. This guy was a German, Mr Zuber, so he was pretty strict. But he told me he was very happy with the work I had done. This is what young people need to do today. They can not just cut and paste and turn it it. They have to rewrite it in their own words.

I wouldn't have thought so before I got a job recently with a web-based tutoring platform, but after reading 50+ student writing assignments in the last month or so, it seems like some kids probably do have AI do their homework for them. "Another way that Rolling Meadows Middle School could improve is no homework...."; "Another way that Diamond Hills High School could help students is no homework..."; "Another way that General George S. Patton Finishing School For Girls could modernize is no homework..."

My first son was in kindergarten when he taught me how to use a computer. Kids are very fast to pick up on the logic they use which makes no sense to me at all. My niece use to play a lot of computer games and I was worried that it would ruin her. Turns out that NASA paid for her to get her Ph.D. in Chemistry. So she turned out fine. My younger son use to build his own computer systems. Now he is a Computer Engineer. They just have to get in there and figure it out.

It is ok for students to do a cut and paste and turn it in for their homework.
Some people call it plagiarism. Is that acceptable in our school system?

Plagiarism can also be considered a felony under certain state and federal laws. For example, if a plagiarist copies and earns more than $2,500 from copyrighted material, he or she may face up to $250,000 in fines and up to ten years in jail. Most corporations and institutions will not tolerate any form of plagiarism.

Do you mean "can it" ... as in ... "does it have the ability to"?

Or do you mean "can it" ... as in ... "it can't break the law"?

In my opinion, AI can do your homework for you, unless it is programmed not to break the law.

I mean can you get away with using a chatbot to do your homework for you? Are chatbots so good, so good, so good, that people do not know they are talking to one?

I took a class in Technology Based Distributed Learning (Distance Ed) and for the first 5 weeks all responses by the professor was from a chat bot. He seemed a bit strange, but no one knew he we were dealing with a chat bot. They can be very convincing when you limit there subject matter.

What if they use AI for tech support. I think it is plagiarism, but people are already starting to use AI and chatbots to do their work for them. I just saw a commercial on TV that I am pretty sure was written by a chat bot. So it is up to the school system to teach their students how to use chatbot to be more productive on their job.

If we ask chatbot we are told: "No, it is not acceptable for students to use chatbots or any other forms of cheating to complete their homework or assignments. Cheating goes against the principles of academic integrity and undermines the value of education. It is important for students to learn and understand the material on their own so that they can develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Additionally, using chatbots or other forms of cheating can result in consequences such as failing a class or being expelled from school."

That is precisely what Chatbot does - research various websites. A chatbot like PERPLEXITY is a lot better because it gives references so we can go to the websites and study them for ourselves.

Chatbot is a tool to help us do research. But it can write for us. I can tell it to write a Celine song and it will.

I have to carry my tools in my toolbox. So I just try to have the tools I need to get the job done. I do not want to have to carry around tools that I am not using.

What do you call it?

I use to sell knives for maybe 20 years. A knife in the hands of a carpenter can build a house. A butcher can prepare food for dinner. A doctor can use a knife to bring about healing. But there are people who will use a knife as a weapon to harm people. I would try to sell them pepper spray if they needed to defend themselves. It is our choice if we want to do good or evil. They use to joke about an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other. We have to decide who we are going to listen to.
