Hey, I gave my life to Jesus about a month ago and made many changes to my life as a result. As a non-believer I watched The Walking Dead without a thought that it was poisoness. Now that Im conscious about avoiding sin, Im concerned about this show. The thing is I really like this show and I will be disappointed if I have to give it up. It is full of violence, death, and gore. But does watching this stuff cause me to sin? I would greatly appreciate some opinions. Thanks.

True. But if all those Christians jumped off a bridge, would you?

After I prayed about this yesterday, I had a dream last night and I was told I could watch "The Walking Dead" as long as I didnt smoke weed while watching it. I have no problem with that.

But thats where Im at so far with this.

I would be cautious about what dreams are telling you, especially if you are smoking drugs.

I watch Game of Thrones, which has *ahem*:
witchcraft, dragons, undead armies, a pantheon of gods, religious inquisitions, sorcery, torture, blood, death, sex, treason, war, rape, incest, child killing, and patricide.

And yet my strength and faith in God is still here. ~Who would've thought~

Yes, you can watch the Walking Dead
It's fine to watch anything as long as you know that it is fiction. And no, a fully grown adult isn't influenced by media because the matured mind has already set their values.

Scripture doesn't establish a list of movies, television programs, or the like that we can and can't watch. Such moralistic scrutiny isn't part of the Christian faith--though some churches do unfortunately engage in extravagant moralizing.

Such things are not a matter of Divine Law--what God commands/forbids--but a matter of conscience. It's up to you to decide what you can watch or shouldn't watch.

Also, I'd avoid things you think you were told in dreams--that isn't a particularly prudent way of doing things. My immediate recommendation is that you get yourself into a decent church so you can have a support structure of people building you up in faith and where you can hear the Gospel preached and receive the Sacraments.

Excellent advice! I have just noticed Troy is new here, and looking at his previous posts to see where he is at. I know The Lord can speak through dreams, but I know too that dreams can be crazy born of an imagination running loose. But same can be said for all ideas we get, even those when people read the scriptures! At the end of the day, when treating the things in the mind as spiritually divine, one needs to always use common sense and acknowledge what is right. I do think that Troy has done that in the example above.

BTW Troy, it is really nice to see you here, I recognise you are able to help many people :)

If you feel watching the shows will cause you to sin then it is best to refrain. Some may avoid violence, others sordid scenes, and some, terrible actors/actresses

For me it is a personal perspective that lets us decide what we consume when it is broadcast on television.
I've seen the previews for this show. There is nothing in it that compels me to want to watch and have all those images deposited into my psyche.
There's an old adage that was born for a very good reason and survives to this day, in my personal opinion. "Garbage in garbage out".

We are what we eat and since that is so how are we not what we consume with our eyes and ears?
The subconscious does not discriminate. It takes in all that we witness before our senses as true to life. And then our whole self adjusts to our emotional reactions to those visceral sounds and images.

Watching people threatened by gory zombies? Bloody slaughter, fear, horror? For an hour?Such shows are sin.
Peace be still. :prayer:

I would see no problem in watching your show.
Last year my college roommate and I watched the series "Dexter" (which is about a serial killer who kills other serial killers, it's genuinely a great show with awesome character development) and that does not fit the Christian ideal. Lots of people actually gave us slack for it. Enjoy your show and don't kill people.

Dexter was a depraved murderer just as were those he targeted.
Thou shalt not murder.
Why would we be "fans" of such a man as that?

Or walking dead people for that matter?

Fans of character development and marvelous plot storytelling? I didn't like the murders and was not a fan of them, but I did enjoy watching as the director produced a great story and showed the change of a person's heart.

Faith in God is not a mental and emotional feeling, it is expressed through our actions. If our actions contradict God's intent for our lives, then our faith is weak.
Yes, you can watch the Walking Dead
Not if he doesn’t have the faith to watch it.

*Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.* (Rom 14:22-23).

Even fiction has an influential effect on our minds. That’s why we watch them. We experience happiness, sadness, sorrow, empathy, anger, bitterness, vengeance, etc. All those emotions are real emotions that are generated from watching fiction.

Of all the fictional shows on television, Game of Thrones is one of the most influential. The show maybe fictional, but its emotional effects on our minds are real and potentially harmful (may cause high blood pressure).
