  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Last summer I brought my kids camping and my little one was about 26 months, my older one 5 years. I picked a family campground with a site that backed onto a park with a playground, and very close to bathrooms and other activity centres. Also, we went camping with friends who had children close to the same age as mine, their site was right beside ours. I also purchased a new tent which was very roomy so the kids had lots of room to play on the day it rained. I bought each of the kids their very own little flashlight to sleep with at night which they thought was wonderful (should have brought extra batteries). The kids had a fantastic time and both of them cried when it was time to leave. I hope to do it again this summer.

As you already know, there are extra gear and stuff you need to bring to accommodate our little ones: sunscreen, bug repellent, life jackets whenever near/on the water, bottled water from home (no matter how 'safe' the campground water or how sparkling the spring water seems), pre-made and frozen comfort food just in case they don't like your camping food, a porta-potty, just in case, and wetnaps. And extra clothes.

We've taken our son camping since he was an infant (he's now four). One thing we did do was get a proper and comprehensive first aid kit, just in case. We also added kids band-aids. Some of the more 'uncommon' items inludes:

- glow sticks to wear around his next when it gets dark
- garden gloves for hiking to minimize slivers in the woods
- his own camping chair, flashlight, water bottle, backpack, cutlery to carry
- his own Motorola walkie-talkie (ours is good to 3 miles)

Our driving habits have changed too - no more 5 hours straight without stopping. Instead, lots of pitstops to pee, stretch, and play.

We always camped when our kids were small... took my son when he was six weeks old. Camping gives them freedom to roam and have fun and be close to nature and they tend to make friends and when they are small get adopted by older kids.

The key to sucsessful camping with kids is to relax and go with the flow.

I keep one case full of neat clothes for if we visit anywhere civilised... but just give them a bag of their own old cloths so they can chill out and get dirty with no worries.

We've camped at sites that are so back to nature they make me cry. One place was the farm site used as GreenGrasses cottage in 'Heartbeat' if anyone knows it! lol... Disgusting and no joke! But the kids loved it!

So have fun... and avoid sites with dangers like free access to water etc... etc... so that you can relax too... especialy as kids get older and so have more freedom to roam on their own.
