I've been a coc since I was young and I was baptized as one. However, I was raised in a non church going family and am not up on my bible. I was wondering if there is a book or something that i may buy that would bring me up to speed on things so i don't feel so out of place. I feel rather stupid in bible study class. Also what are so of your favorite calvinist books (any kind)?
Thank you for your help,
Jo

Assuming you already have a good study Bible, check this forum for the study Bible thread if not, my suggestion for the next book would be "The Westminster Confession of Faith", published by Free Presbyterian Publications, ISBN: 0-902506-08-0 Hardbound, or 0-902506-35-8 paperback. The hardbound is about $14.00.

The book contains the Westminster documents, The Westminster Confession of Faith, The Larger Catechism and Shorter Catechism, and other items at the back.

The Confession, Larger and Shorter Catechisms are accurate statements of the principle truths of the Christian religion, with proof texts.

Our previous minister said that if a person memorized the Shorter Catechism questions and answers, 107 of them, they would know more theology than most of the Christian world, including many ministers. I agree with him.

I hope this is of some help.

I certainly have to agree with that.

The Bible is the best text of course :)

I would suggest a few books by Sproul

1)Essential truths of the Christian Faith

2 )Now Thats a good question!

3) Chosen By God

All three are fairly basic and yet also address some pretty deep subjects

I personally like Grace Unknown by R.C. Sproul. It lays out the basics of reformed theology very well. It's not to long, and it's easy to read.

I don't know much about the CoC, so I don't know if it's considered reformed or not, but it is Calvinist, and this books details that very well.

I think everyone who has read this book will agree that it should be your first to pick up (besides the Bible). Desiring God by John Piper. It is a MUST read for every young christian, especially if you are looking for something calvinistic.

Horton is a great author! "Putting Amazing Back into Grace" is a must-read as well. Also, I don't think you can go wrong if you browse through the selections at http://www.monergismbooks.com.

I've decided that I am going to read "Putting Amazing Back into Grace" at least once a year.

Also try reading "After Darkness, Light." It is a wonderful offering by ten theologians and pastors celebrating the minsitry of Sproul. Five of the chapers deal with the 5 Solas and the other 5 chapters discuss TULIP.

There is also a five hour DvD titled "Amazing Grace: The History and Theology of Calvinism." It is very well done (well, except for the fact that at one point someone should have given D. James Kennedy a glass of water and two of the little skits were kind of silly.) But it is money well spent. You can watch two clips of it here: http://www.amazinggracedvd.com/

I think I'm going to ask for the DVD for my birthday. I've heard several people talk about how good it is.

I haven't read "Putting Amazing Back Into Grace" but I've heard great reviews on that one too!
