Calling Musos..!

HI everyone!

I havent been in the forums for a while so pls bear with me if this has already been done before...

But I was wondering if there are any other Christian musos out there? Maybe we can talk about what instruments we play, and where we play (if we're in a band) and what type of music do you like to play (both secular and Christian).

I suppose I should start :)
I occasionally play the drums at our youth group gatherings, and although I'd like to be in a band, I am not in one yet. We've tried to form our own all girls praise band many times but as we all work and/or study, its been a bit hard (though I admit its still a dream of mine). I admit im not WONDERFUL but when I play for Him, I give everything I have and I know thats all He asks from me ;)

Drums for 9 years, Guitar for 7, Bass for 6. Bass is my fave I guess, but when leading worship it's really only going to be the guitar! I'm the frontman for our youth band - we're called Judah.

I can dabble with recorder and piano, and more recently had a crack at violin... a new frontier? Maybe...

Hi there,

I am a muso myself. I play guitar, keyboards, and used to play trombone and violin.

I was a pretty prolific songwriter up until 2001 when a band idea I had fell flat on its face, and switched to being a punter. I've played at the occasional musician's jam nights at my local music shop, but haven't much interest in making it in the music business.

My music interests include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Danielle Dax, Moby, Morrissey, Santana, Tool, Dido, Madonna, Shane Gentry & The Nekkid Monday Band, Regurgitator, Suzi Quatro, Sparks and anything that is out of left field.

I'm not into the P&W stuff, as I find it to be rather hypocritical for some people calling themselves Christians to go through the week treating other people like muck and then going to church on Sunday and singing praise to Jesus.

Not everyone who is into praise and worship live the double life you describe. Besides, if you plan on being in heaven where we spend eternity worshipping Jesus, it may help to follow the Psalms lead and

"Praise the Lord!
Praise God in His Sanctuary, praise Him in His mighty firmament!
Praise Him for His mighty deeds, praise Him according to His surpassing greatness!
Praise Him with trumpet sound, praise Him with lute and harp!
Praise Him with tambourine and dance, praise Him with strings and pipe!
Praise Him with clanging cymbals, praise Him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that breathes praise the LORD!
Praise the Lord!"

OK... um yeah I guess you have a point but we're all hypocrites here... remember we are sinners saved by grace... none of us can claim we do any better... because the truth is we don't! I am a sinner... I guess I am one of those hypocrites who is trying through the week but invariably falls short... I won't try and tell you I am perfect throughout the week... but just because I am not doesn't stop me from offering my praise to Jesus. Doesn't Jesus say to come as we are... He does the changing, not us. And even if I am imperfect, WorkingMum's right, so many others in the Worship movement (shouldn't it all be worship to God  ) do live right, not perfect, but nonetheless much better examples than I am.

One phrase I heard was better to join the hypocrites inside the church than be with the hypocrites outside. Food for thought.

The simple solution is, don't treat people like muck :D

I started learning guitar a while back, but that was too complicated for me at the time, so I moved to bass. It's a whole lot easier to use one figner at a time ;)

Anyway, played bass at church for awhile, then my older brother decided to stop playing for P&W and focus on giving messages, so I had to take over pplaying acoustic guitar. So I haven't been able to play my love for awhile (I love playing guitar, it's just, I will never be a guitarist like I am a bassist).

I'm not in any band, but my brother and I co-wrote a song that will be going on the new Youth Alive NSW album. You will be able to get an ep type cd which has the song at the Welcome to Summer party.

I think bass is my first love - even though I am at times a worship leader and yes it's better on guitar or piano as you have much more control over songs etc, I still love grooving it out.. you play 4 or 5 string? Say what's your real name 4-square... just curious so I know who to look out for :D and should I have heard of you/your older brother? I am one for reading the CD jackets so I may have come across the name before...

Its great to see so many musos here. Music is a great thing to learn and a great way to meet with people.

played piano for 7 years before I had to give it up due to lack of time, still play bits and pieces; chanter (bagpipes for those who are unaware) for 1 year, learnt snare for 1 year, learnt and taught tenor drum in pipe band for 4 years before we moved away; kit for 7 and a half years; percussion 4 years; cornet for 1 year and a bit, though am still a beginner at that.

Bands I have been in... (Pipe Band -tenor drum; 3 school bands - kit/perscussion; city brass band - kit/percussion; youth wind ensemble - kit/percussion; city wind ensemble - kit/percussion; orchestra - percussion; have also played in various churches; am finishing off TEE music (percussion) now)... hmm... well I think thats all, if you don't include exams... mind you even with all my extensive "experience" I still am not very good. Its called, lack of practise... hehe...

It always fascinates me how people can play the guitar (accoustic, bass, electric, etc) I'd love to be able to at least know where the notes are... I have also found doing physics has helped me to appreciate music more too... after learning how to play it, I was able to see how things are constructed to make the sounds esp. with the vibrations in strings, open (both ends of the pipe are open) and closed pipes (one end of the pipe is closed, the other open). The differences between them is what gives the different instruments their specific timbres and the harmonics of each note.

hey
i used to play flute but switched to recorder (yes, recorder - dont laugh!) but if i could do anything i would be singing :)
im not really into p&w either - but there are some great christian bands that praise god (as they should), but not in the hillsongs style. at the mo i like blind, compliments of gus, angelas dish. i also love michael card and keith green lol - my parents played them heaps when i was little
hopefully i can do some singing at church or in a band, but i wanna do recorder at the con!
is anyone going to sonfest??

im not really into it either - but just coz u listen to p&w doesnt mean ur a hypocrite - perhaps i misunderstood the comment.

i heard a really good talk on hypocrisy - if you dont do things at church, dont do them during the week. eg if you wouldnt feel comfortable wearing something revealing (ladies...) at church, dont wear it elsewhere. or if you wouldn't swear at church, dont swear with your friends.
