I thought you were talking about someone named Rose who would call him "grandfather".

Why would Rose freak out at that?

Rose doesn't really know much about the Doctor's past and she was a little un-nerved over Sarah Jane being a former companion of the Doctor.
The premise being that Rose thought she was the only one to have travelled with him.
She is now finding out much more about the doctor and is starting to realise she has much too learn about him and what her role as a companion entails.
So to find out that he has a grandaughter and could have been married could be a bit freaky for her.

I didn't realise it would take that long for you to view the new series.
There's always the DVD collection of the first series with Chris Eccleston and I think "The Christmas Invasion" is available also .
I hope you enjoy the programme as much as I have when you get around to seeing it.

:)

The new series of Dr. Who ROCKS! So far this season we've had a werewolf, nasty robots and the return of Sarah Jane Smith and K9!

If any of you can get to a UseNet server on your 'puter there is a newsgroup where you can download episodes. Legality is questionable but since they WERE broadcast over free television...

I wasn't trying to justify it, I was simply saying I could ignore it on the grounds that it wasn't competley unprescidented. Some fans are better at ignoring things that make no sense than others. The Doctor's been kissed quite a lot in the recent series anyway: Renette, Rose, Jack Harkness...

Oh I wasn't having a dig there Lastie. I was making an observation about how the fans, of which I am one, view the Doctor. That's all!

Roll on Saturday, Cybermen!!!

My misunderstanding. Roll on the Cybermen indeed. It's just a shame they seem to have been created by Trigger from 'Only Fools and Horses'. Yet more proof you can't trust anyone from Peckham.

LOL

He'll probably call the Doctor "Dave".

I'm careful not mention too much about the new series as I don't want to spoil for our US cousins.

the new series boxed set is out in the UK but wont be released in the US until July 4th.

I can't believe the first new season is over already. It seemed so short (at least compared to the lenght of American TV series).

The old series (all of them) usually consisted of approximately 4 half-hour episodes (on average). So a season may have run longer but you only got to see it for 1/2 hour each shot. Once they came out on tape, of course, you got the whole episode. I like the one hour format. I was sorry the show was over so soon for this season. I am not thrilled with the view of the new doctor who played Bart Crouch, Jr., from the last Harry Potter movie. Don't get me wrong. The actor did a fine job in this role but I am having a hard time seeing him as the doctor. I may quickly change my mind once I see him.

There are various things that I miss with this new series. I enjoyed the fact that the doctor had a history of regenerations (which wasn't even touched on until this last episode), I liked the unusual clothing. I liked the older TARDIS. This new one looks so ancient and decrepit inside. I don't believe the original TARDIS, over all those years, being semi-sentient or possessing a living soul. The original was just a machine. Quirky machine, lovable machine, perhaps, but not having a heart of it's own.

I am also having ambivalent feelings about the 'love' issue with him and his companions. In the old series, the Doc was asexual (maybe a sexual being but displaying none of it toward his companions). In this one, both love and affection have been mentioned (even if it's not purely sexual). I really did enjoy the kiss between him and Rose, looked real romantic, even if it was for a purpose, but I was thinking...no, no, NO! This is not something the doctor would ever have done in the original series'. And getting kissed on the lips by a male companion simply would never have showed up. Okay, I didn't say EWWWWW!!! but then again, I've grown weary of secular, politically correct TV constantly throwing in 'gay' moments to make the production appear more viewer friendly. And I felt that this was all it was.

But the show has remained faithful to several elements of the original series, including the doctor's quirky and sort of off-the-wall personality.

That may be true, but as I've said above, it is unheard of for nearly 30 years of the Doctor Who TV history. Some changes are good (like taking off the Dalek limitations with stairs and hills). I don't think romance in the Doctor's life would be good. For one thing he changes companions often (at least once a season), and also in the past, it kept things platonic. The doctor wasn't motivated to act purely out of love for his companion. Now with the doctor being the only one left of his kind, I guess I could see some current writer trying to make something of this but is romance really necessary to the series? I don't think so.

I think you will! I thought Christopher Eccleston did a great job as the Doctor but I prefer David Tennant. Oh, and steel yourself for more passionate moments. As my dear mother said when she saw one of them, "The Doctor just doesn't do that!" !!

Don't know if you knew it, but Colin Baker had grown up watching Dr. Who, and loved it, and always wanted to play the Doctor. But he became a lawyer, instead.

As he had done minor acting on the side, when the role for Dr. Who came up, he auditioned and got the job. After he started, he (being a lawyer) saw where the BBC was ripping the actors out of lots of money regarding the toy industry and the fan stuff, and insisted on his right to his portion of it. They (the BBC) did not like that (for some reason  ) and so, since they couldn't just cancel the contract, they cancelled half his shows and directed him horribly, hoping people would hate his Doctor, but he managed to pull out some really good episodes anyway.

WOW!!! I didn't know he was a lawyer. He never mentioned that in any of the conventions I'd seen him in. (He's my favorite Doctor by the way, though I liked them all). I must've seen him at least 4 times and not once did he mention being an attorney. Pretty cool though. Anyway, whatever the folks at the BBC did to wreck his Doctor career, I loved him as the Doctor anyway (and in person too). He had a great memory. Would remember me from convention to convention.

Yeah, the Stranger was in a series of some sort. I wish I could have obtained some but they are so darn expensive to have shipped from the UK.

Incidentally, my husband (now 59 years old as of this week) has been a fan since they started showing them in the US. He has each and ever episode starting with Hartnell, all the way up to Sylvester McCoy (okay, I liked him as the Doctor too...call me strange). He only got about 1/4 of the McCoy episodes when the local stations went funky on us and only aired them sporadically. Unfortunately, most of these have been buried in the house and I'd have a dickens of a time digging them out. But he has them...including the one unfinished episode with Tom Baker.

We also had the good fortune to have met each of the first 7 doctors except for Hartnell and Davidson. Patrick Troughton we saw a month or two before he passed away (he wasn't feeling well even then and had apologized for needing to sit so much). But he was as animated as his strength would allow and was a funny speaker.

At the time of meeting Pertwee, he was selling his book "Moon Boots and Dinner Suits".

We were members of the UNYT, The Prydonians of Princeton, and the Gallifreyan Embassy. Oh how I miss those days. Now that my kids are old enough to enjoy these conventions and things, there isn't much in our new area to attend. :sigh:

She's right!!!!! ;) LOL! I'll be alright with it I guess. It's still Dr. Who for the most part anyway.
