Why would anyone have an unopened set of Dr. Who videos? Must not have been a real fan. :p

If I recall correctly, it was an estate sale from the collection of a life-long fan. This one particular set was 'set aside' and there was another set of Myth Maker videos which were opened and used.

When would the original episodes have been lost? I have seen them many times.

In the 70's the Beeb cleaned house and threw out lots of old film, including almost all of Hartnell's and Troughton's stories (and a lot of Pertwee's early stories (the color versions - but the b/w's remained and were later colorized.)) The restoration of these stories has been a decades long quest of a dedicated set of fans. We can enjoy those stories because of that effort.

Does anyone have "Summoned by Shadows", or even seen it? It is ............... interesting.

No, what is it?

I knew that they had "lost" most of Troughton's years, but didn't know that Hartnell or Pertwee's were lost. They have obviously recovered Hartnell's and Pertwee's, but last I knew they still had very few of Troughton's. Is that still so?

During one of the many "hiatus's" towards the end of Dr. Who, during the 6th and 7th Doctors, they filmed a show with Colin Baker and the girl who played Peri. It was called "Summoned by Shadows", and Colin played a "Dr. Who" kind of person, but was really not related to Dr. Who at all. I have a copy of it, and was a tad disappointed in it. I was just wondering if anyone else had heard of it or seen it.

Sadly, that seems to be the case.

Very interesting. I had not heard of that.

I think that is the case. What upsets me is I only got to see a few minutes of one of Troughton's episodes and never more than that. I was briefly in Toledo, Ohio at the time. Those episodes never ran on PBS in Boston :(

Never saw it myself, but that Dr. Who-like series was called "The Stranger" and was made for home video in the UK. It was created, I think, due to a dislike among many of Sylvester McCoy.

As for me, I really didn't care for either Baker or McCoy... both were big steps down Davison and even bigger from Tom Baker. Christopher Eccleston is the first new Doctor since then I can really consider to be The Doctor. When I saw pics of David Tenant, I was
disappointed to see him go for a wardrobe more like what the other Doctors wore than the radical departure Eccleston took.

I got one more Eccleston episode I can watch before our cable service is cut (at my request since my wife and I are moving to a new place). I'll miss the remainder of the season, yet not too upset about it. The new series so far is a bit more advanced in writing without abandoning its cheesy kiddy roots, and the portrayals of the Doctor and Rose are excellent. Nice to know the Doctor is the hero, yet he's
got great losses, sadness and vulnerability he must work hard to fight. His attitude towards families shows his not wanting to remember the loss of his own family (his parents... whether he had a wife or kids of his own hasn't been disclosed). I can't wait to see how Tenant will do, though I'll miss Eccleston.

Don't know if you knew it, but Colin Baker had grown up watching Dr. Who, and loved it, and always wanted to play the Doctor. But he became a lawyer, instead.

As he had done minor acting on the side, when the role for Dr. Who came up, he auditioned and got the job. After he started, he (being a lawyer) saw where the BBC was ripping the actors out of lots of money regarding the toy industry and the fan stuff, and insisted on his right to his portion of it. They (the BBC) did not like that (for some reason  ) and so, since they couldn't just cancel the contract, they cancelled half his shows and directed him horribly, hoping people would hate his Doctor, but he managed to pull out some really good episodes anyway.

He must have had a family once. He had a grandaughter. What happened to them before he left Galifrey will probably never be known.

I wonder of she used "grandfather" as an affectionate term or if she is indeed a timelord.

I can't remember the exact dialogue, but it's pretty clear in the pilot episode that both of them are from the same planet, and that they are related. "Grandfather" is quite certainly an accurate description of his relation to her, and not just a description of his role or character.

Would be great if, somehow, both Susan and Romana survived the great war. Having both characters pop up again should never be ruled out by the producers.
Fun part would be for a woman unknown to Rose to freak her out when she calls the Doctor "Grandfather" :D

I read an interview, in the Daily Mail I think, where Russell T Davies said he wouldn't rule out a female Doctor in a future regeneration! Intellectually I can't be against it but emotionally I'm not sure how, or if, that would work.

Interesting. What would that say about things like marriage and relationships in Gallifryen society if regenerations could produce an incarnation that a different sex than the previous one? And would this be a matter of choice or not?

I recently bought a DVD called "lost in time" which has some of the remaing episodes of stories where some of the episodes are missing. For example The Celestial Toymaker only has episode 4 and the faceless ones only has episode 1 and 3 surviving. they did recently find "tomb of the Cybermen" and restored it.

An episode in the next season looks at the Doctor's relationship with his companions.

I believe the boxed set of the Eccleston season is out on the 4th of July in the US.

Not forgetting Tennant's well delivered "Banannas are good" line. For a second he sounded just like Eccelston. And the Doctor riding a horse out of a mirror, that was cool. Although, since when could the Doctor do a Vulcan Mind Meld? There have been references to the Time Lords having interesting mental powers before, so I suppose I can let that one slide.

Yeah, it was pointed out on Dr Who Confidential that the Who fans can justify anything the Doctor does! Like the full-on snog with Mme de Pompadour, she initiated it so that's ok, right? Interesting to read that Sophia Myles and David Tennant have become an item since working on that episode.
