  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

the most recent decisions from the executive area of this site are not in keeping with the doctrine and polity of our denomiational stances.
I've suggested this site to dozens of people, some have come and tried it out, some have stayed. Right now, I fear that while our more conservative members will feel welcome, our more liberal UM's will not. I am not at present recommending this site to anyone.

I concur. I can think of very few people at my church that would feel welcome here. I know I sure don't.

I couldn't recommend it to anyone at my church either. They'd think I'm insane for investing so much into this site, and I'm beginning to think they're right.

And just as an aside: I'm always amazed to see the difference in opinion staffers have once they are off staff.

I think it depends on what the members-to-be are looking for, liberal or not. If the members-to-be are looking to pray with and for others, fellowship, to spend time studying the word with people from different backgrounds/denominations/countries, etc, or to share the Gospel with non-believers - I think they would feel very welcome here.

Yeah. Right. Let's just criticize the people we don't welcome here by saying they have impure motives.

Blame the victim.

Unbelievable.
Are you referring to my post??? Did I criticize anyone?? I think you completely misunderstood my post - let me try again. If someone comes here to get involved with the politics of this site, then no, they probably won't enjoy it. If they come here to fellowship, etc., then they probably will enjoy it. That is what I meant!

posted a coment on facebook. 2 get more ppl 2 join and soz 4 abanding this subfourm.
I posted a bulletin on myspace. Only person I heard back from was an atheist, and that's probably because I pmed him personally.

Maybe bulletins are too impersonal... many people that are my myspace friends go to my church... I should probably pm them.

hey morgie!!!
I agree to a point, but we UM's have what is referred to as a "pluralistic" membership. While the UM Book of Discipline and the Book of Resolutions from each General Conference "take a stand" on certain issues, individual members are not required to accept or "ascend to" those doctrines or theologies. CF, of late, has taken a few stands that go directly against "official" UM beliefs and in so doing has restricted those UM's who do accept and agree with our denominational stance are not allowed to be as free as others with their beliefs. So, technically, it's not just politics that would affect those people, but in reality, the policies and rules of the site (read: "restrictions" for certain positions) could tend to make some UM's feel slighted.
We UM's tend to be very ecumenical in nature and we are PROUD to be open to those who don't agree with us on doctrine and polity and welcome them as Christian brothers and sisters; but the reverse is not true of all Christians as you know--and as I said, lately, the stated ecumenical goals of this site are not in keeping with reality (MY OPINION HERE), which directly goes against our world wide motto--Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.
I think this is what is meant by those who have expressed reservations about invited other UM's here right now.
I pray that you guys on staff are blessed for your service to others!
Peace
mkd

Among other things I concur.

For those people with thick skins who understand on some message boards one is required to rhetorically fight with one hand tied behind the back and blindfolded while others are issued free flamethrowers and steroids, I would recommend such. The fact is, most people are not message board people. If someone is, though, and they have a thick skin, I'd say go for it.

They would be if they're politically correct.
