  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I read the Chronicles of Narnia when I was a child and I adored them. The Horse and His Boy was my favorite. I returned and reread them as an adult and I wasn't quite so impressed.

More recently I've read some of his other books, both fiction and non-fiction. My favorites are Miracles and The Screwtape Letters. I find those to be well-written, keen, and insightful. Others I've found rather forgettable, as evidenced by the fact that I've forgotten which other ones I've read.

Never read his book, but I did enjoy the Chronicles of Narnia........... on DVD.

Sorry C.S Lewis... you can give me a spanking using your ghostly powers if you want.

Seriously now! I know we've all been having fun and games with this but time to be more serious. I'm kind of curious to read about him, to see what's so great about him... like what is he a Christian philosopher? Doubt he'll convert me but maybe give me something to chew on.

I think what appeals to people is a few things. He was just a regular guy - not a theologian, pastor, philosopher or someone who was bound by allegiences to a particular way of thought - and so aside from spreading Christianity people don't feel he's got ulterior motives. He was a guy who came to Christianity in his 30s so he knew the thoughts and feelings that many unbelievers have when looking in from the outside. And most importantly their isn't anyone better at phrasing a simple truth in a beautiful and imaginative way - he was just a great writer and an even better thinker.

the Screwtape Letters are way fun
they are letters from a minor demon to his boss, a middle managment demon
it gives a better understanding of sin from a christian POV, I particularly like the part of gluttony, it is not about how much you eat but whatver way the food can make you uncharitable to others, talking about an old lady who "only wants some weak tea and some crisp toast" when she goes to visit friends but always is critical of how they make tea, she thinks she is ok because what she asks for is cheap and simple but it leads to her rejecting what others offer her and makes her a real pain in the butt, with men it is more offten that they come to think of themself as a true connosoir and only they know the "proper" way to do things, pride, uncharity, this is what matters most
