I've been studying the last three weeks for my board licensing exam. I was scheduled to take it tomorrow, but I cancelled. The last week or so I've been feeling exhausted. Sleep or taking Sunday off have brought no restoration to normal. During the three weeks, I've been taking vyvanse, an ADD med similar to adderrall. I've also been building a tolerance to it. My sleep has been shallow and I wake up at the same time (7am) every morning no matter how late I go to bed. My head feels foggy and "full." It's like I can feel my brain. I have a little hard time keeping my head up. anyway, prayer and advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

Hey, Mac ...

I did a little research. Vyvanse has a history of causing depression and headaches. Maybe you're getting a low-threshold effect from it. The constant need for sleep would go along with possible depressive symptoms. Have you noticed anything like that?

Seems the dosage doesn't make much difference, but most who are reporting the symptoms are at 50 to 70mg. Worth talking to your doctor about.

You're a little old for this, but you could be going through a metabolism change, which could be the end of your ADD. Good for you if that's the case (this happened to my son at 22), but continuing the med will bring on effects like these, too. Again, something to discuss with your doctor.

You're also wearing yourself out studying for boards. That makes a big difference in the effects the med has on you, too. It isn't your normal state of mind and work load. All these things might combine to cause you to suffer through these issues.

Obviously pray. I know you know that. Contact your doctor and ask him/her about what you should do.

As far as I'm concerned, my ADD is cured, just haven't taken a test to make it official. The meds are so that I can have enough energy to study for 8hrs a day. Can't go longer than 4 hrs without it.

I really appreciate your response, it's very helpful. I've contacted my doc, he asked if I was depressed and I said yes.

I took the vyvanse not because of concentration issues, but because I need the energy. I, like most people, can't study more than 4-5 hrs without being mentally/physically exhausted. No really, the feeling is akin to being intoxicated. I can barely read anymore after that and even my walking is a bit wobbly. With the vyvanse, I go 10 hrs without fail. It's just that vyvanse has the side effects of depression. So my doc will set me up with an SSRI and we'll see how it works.

I read a little bit about vyvanse and that it causes "Severe aggression - some patients have reported sudden mood changes, inability to control rage, physical abuse of others"

Have you seen the documentary called "Generation RX"? I watched it recently and it talked a lot about drugs that are suppose to help kids focus, give them either depression or aggressive behavior.

You obviously know more than me when it comes to the side effects of prescription drugs, but just wondering if focusing in school is worth the risk?

It's only for a temporary time. I take my exam this month. After that, I'm done with the meds. I'll never take it while in clinic. Yep, I do feel more aggressive, as well as more anxious. When it wears off, then it's just depression and messes with my sleep.

Spent last day out of town at a friend's place and haven't slept that well in a long time.
