  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

When I was shopping to get my school supplies a few weeks ago since my Fall Semester for College began this week, today is my 3rd day, I saw a couple of sections that have bulletproof backpacks in the isles. I also saw bulletproof inserts for backpacks which are much cheaper than bulletproof backpacks themselves. I have never saw them on the shelves ever when back to school shopping before. But, their sales have skyrocketed since the Parkland school shooting.
In 1965, Paul Harvey said that if he was the devil, he "would encourage schools to refine young intellects but neglect to discipline emotions just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you had to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door." And bulletproof backpacks and inserts would be a perfect addition to this list as well. And I'm not really surprised at all about this because as Christians, we know that when the presence and fear of God is removed from schools for the sake of religious neutrality, then community morality declines and this is the result.
I would gladly get a bulletproof backpack. But is it really worth it? Should I buy it? The inserts can cost like $99. But I know it won't hold up against a high powered rifle, like an AR-15, unless, perhaps, maybe I have a lot of thick books ahead of the bulletproof insert. And I would have to be careful not to have any false sense of security. If God Forbid, I get caught up in a school shooting, I would still have to run, hide, and fight as if I did not have the bulletproof insert.

Well, I feel for you. But anywhere we can have enemies attacking us, including also by hitting us with cars. So, our attention needs to be to You, O God our Father, and thanking You and depending on You who are in control of what can happen to us. We need to stay ready for You, all the time, for all You please to do with us.

And have the shield of faith for fighting against Satan's fiery darts which would break us down in fear and lusts.

If it is a serious concern, you could consider buying some covert body armor and just wear it all the time. It's basically a bullet resistant vest designed to be worn under your clothes plus it is somewhat knife resistant as well.

If I was to buy personal armor or protection of any type, I'd do the research on products from companies that sell the stuff police, security guards, etc. wear who face serious risk of being around flying bullets, ricochets, or edged weapons. Until I did the research and hear what pros say, I wouldn't spent $100 on something on the aisle next to notebooks and pencils.

Lord have mercy! Truly the demons are at work in society, while we are largely asleep. Then these big violent shootings happen and everyone wonders why. It's not a bad or unnatural reaction, but as you've rightly identified (or I suppose Paul Harvey identified), the control of the emotions which is at the heart of everything is not a principle by which society runs. That is really up to the individual and the community, but many do not have the strength for it, having not been trained themselves to practice it. It is like the story of the woman in India who went to Gandhi for help with her child's over-consumption of sugar. Gandhi told the woman to come back in a week, and when she did she asked him why he had asked her to do that, and he said "I had to stop eating it myself before I could tell you anything about it." Nobody does that. Nobody wants to look inwardly and find that they are really not as good as they present themselves to be, that they are part of the problem.

Since you are Orthodox, you could compare it to the fight for mastery over the passions that is at the heart of the ascetic struggle. When you do not have that, when you just give in to everything, you get a world in which bullet proof backpack inserts seem logical, because sadly they are. Because these things do happen. I can't tell you whether or not you should buy one, but I would say that your personal safety is what is most important, so as long as it does not lull you into a false sense of security as you wrote in the OP, perhaps it would not be a bad idea.

It just tears me up that this is 'just how things are now' or whatever. No it isn't. We are a broken society, and a broken world. I saw a friend of mine recently post on Facebook about buying one of those inserts for her son's backpack. He is entering the sixth grade. That is chilling. I honestly wanted to cry, you know? It is conceivable that today's children will never know peace.

You do not walk away from Christ as the world largely has and expect that whatever other ways you find will be fruitful and peaceful. Peace is only in Christ, the King of Peace. Lord have mercy. I will pray for safety, SaintCody777, as unworthy and useless as that may seem against the world.

Even though we have spectacular news coverage when a shooting incident occurs, the frequency of shootings per child in school is so low as to make the purchase of a bullet proof backpack unnecessary.

India is a very poor nation. They have very strict gun control laws. They have about half the number of police officers per 100,000, about half the murder rate, and about 15 times fewer rapes per 100,000. There are fewer Christians per 100,000 in India. Their main religion in Hindu where they do not believe in killing and ate vegetables.

Given that "School Shootings" in the news include Suicides, after school events, ect. and is "Averaging" 1 a week.
That 52 a year, But there's about 132,656 Schools in the us.

So the odds are 52/132656 or 0.04%

Someone's making some good money off of parent's fears.

I doubt a shooter will aim for your backpack.

If people are running from the shooter, it may actually save lives however, since the bullet would hit the backpack (hopefully). It's just sad this is even an offer.

If these backpacks are shown not to be bulletproof, the company needs to be forced to remove them from the market for taking advantage of people worried about the safety of their children.

If we loose the ability to market to fear, our economy will just collapse :D

My pastor in my hometown was shot in a mass shooting (he survived). I was in downtown Philly when a shooting happened and there was a mass stampede (I was more likely to get hurt by the stampede than the actual bullets). My teacher friend, police just arrested some high school kids right up the road for plotting their own mass shooting.

This is not just some hyped up media thing that happens only on the TV, in my book. I find the bulletproof backpack useful, but at the same time, that is just ridiculous that it is even in the conversation.

You should divide by the number of students, not the number of schools. Even in a school that goes through a shooting experience, the majority of the students are not harmed.

One thing to keep in mind SaintCody most of these backpacks aren't designed to stop anything more then a handgun. So I'd say there semi effective and if your going to get one do research so you know what it's capable of withstanding.
