Is it okay to "sample" from the bulk food aisle? My friend says yes, but I can't understand how it is not stealing.

What, you mean "sample" steal? Then one has covered "stealing" with a word to help cover up their crime.

At grocery stores they may have a sample tray, which is okay to sample. And some might say, "I will sample this" means they put it in their cart and pay for it.

You do not eat it in the store and not pay for it. You do not stick it in your shirt and not pay for it. All of that is theft. And calling theft something "nicer" is lying.

As Christians we have the anointing and do not need teachers. We need to listen to our hearts and decide matters on our own using right weights: or you will be eaten by the wolves of the world.

Many have been eaten, deceived greatly, loaded up with tinder. And they go on themselves as false teachers, once simply deluded students. And all awhile God has not punished them so they think all is well. But that is because God is storing it up.

Remember, look at Israel: In 33 AD they killed Jesus on the cross. God let Israel continue for several decades until He had it utterly destroyed in the horrific way it would be.

Just imagine His patience in that matter while those awful, ungodly people stored up their sins and He held His hand back.

Likewise, judge rightly for yourself and be saved and walk the right path. Do not follow the wicked into doing wrong. And bad company corrupts good character. You already seem to have lost your ability to reason between right and wrong on even a trivial matter.

So wake up, and get serious.

Holy assumptions, batman. I came here to see if there was anyone who actually agreed with my friend. Of course I know it's stealing. I just wanted to start a thread about it. Yeesh!

These days when so many people are germphobic one should probably not touch food products one isn't buying mostly out of courtesy.

What are you going to eat? Flour? Granola? If there's no sign saying so, I'd think if you ask a clerk "would it be all right to sample some of this?" they'd say sure.

I think in the bulk candy places in malls it's accepted as long as you're not a pig about it.

I may be wrong but these kinds of questions always seem to be like the stories George Carlin would tell about the wiseguy in Catechism class who would present an unlikely scenario and conclude with "...and would that there be a sin then, Father?"

I made no assumptions and said "If".

If what I said you believe and it convicts you, so be it. If not, then so be it.

Why condemn me for taking the exact same rhetorical stance as you took.

Yeah, I'm a little put off when you accuse me of not taking my faith seriously.

Well, why post such a question rhetorically if you already know the answer?

I am not accusing you of anything, btw.

I am merely throwing out options.

People choose to believe what they wish. I understand not everyone operates in such a way: but I do.

If this is the case, and you mean by "samples" your friend was stuffing goods in his shirt, then glad to hear it.

I suppose I could have just read your mind and told you exactly what you were thinking and where you are at. But, where is the fun in that?

In our grocery store where I work, it is considered stealing if you sample, especially if it's fruits/vegetables which are sold by the pound.
A lot of times we will also come across opened boxes of cookies and such that were 'sampled,' and but never paid for, as the customer decided they didn't like the product.
All these items are now unsellable, because the product has been damaged or destroyed. 'Sampling' is a bane to many grocery stores, as it is one of the ways money is lost.

I was in retail for many years and we called it "grazing". One of the things I found was that it is very common for elderly people who are suffering from Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia to graze, not realizing that they're not supposed to do this. Many times, I had an embarrassed family member come to me to explain and tell me that they would pay for the damaged item.

We never did charge them, of course, we just wrote the item off as damaged.

Not saying that's the case every time, but it's a lot more common than most people think.
