• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I used to cut, but now I bruise myself. Bruising myself has become very difficult to stop. At one point, I was left with huge bruises. I want to stop. It's hard, but I am making progress slowly but surely.

I don't view one type of self-injury any 'less' dangerous than another type. It's all equal because you're still harming yourself.

Is bruising anyone else's main method?

I'm a bruiser too. I've found that whatever type of self injury I'm "in the mood for" -- be it bruising, cutting or burning -- is usually dependent on what emotion is overwhelming me. Bruising usually corresponds with anger. I've got a ton of anger to work though, as it would turn out...

Good job making progress, though. I'm getting there, too. :) If you ever need someone to chat with, you're more than welcome to message me.

I'm similar to halfalive - I switch between cutting, bruising, burning - depending what I'm 'in the mood for', for lack of a better term.

In response to your question, my understanding is that bruising can have it's own dangers and therefore can be just as dangerous as other forms of self-harm. When you bruise, blood vessels have burst inside your skin. So while you're not bleeding 'on the outside', you are bleeding inside. How dangerous this is depends on the severity if the bruise. A critical bruise can even cause death. However, I don't believe critical bruises are often the result of self-harming.

Look after yourself, hope you're getting help. Praying for you ((((((hug))))))

:groupray: We all need to pray about this.
I have problems myself with self injury. When I'm sad/upset and sometimes when I'm mad, I take pushpins or my nails and scratch myself. I used to use my flat iron and get my bangs really hot then press them to my forehead. When I get mad I get the urge and sometimes I actually do bite myself, bang my head on the bars from my bed, hit my legs over and over(sometimes bruising), and pull on my hair.
We all need help with this, and I think that if we all pray for eachother's healing, I believe God will help us. We just have to cry out sincerely..

Amen to this! Thank for the answers everyone! They make me feel less alone and have given me a lot to think about.

Bruising that is interesting I never heard anyone do that. I am on the same boat as you in the self harm matter. I been cutting since I was 14 and I am now 19. I do it to either 1 numb myself or 2 the emotional pain is too much I rather be physically hurt.

If you feel like you cant stop try putting a rubber band around your wrist snap it a couple times, it actually helps! I feel your pain and I am sorry you harm yourself. I am here for you if you ever need to talk!

I've spoken to several other people who bruise themselves as their main method (not on here though). While not as common as cutting, I'd say bruising isn't as uncommon as I'd thought. It made me feel less alone.

As far as self-injury goes, I haven't been doing well. At my worst, I'd be doing it more than once a day or every few days.

But thank you all for the replies.
