In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

because the other threads get hijacked by the "morally superior with a disdain for behavior that differs from theirs ..."

the movie comes out in my city this weekend. i'm looking forward to it because i like the actors in the film and the director directing it for his different and serious approach he takes to all his subject matter (even the hulk).

yeah it's about gay cowboys but i like love stories regardless of sex.

I saw it yesterday...
I hate seeing movies after they get nominated for a zillion awards...because then my expectations are oddly heightened (I swear I put no store in those stupid awards... but I get nitpicky once a movie is nominated)

I liked this movie.. but it was (to me) excruciatingly sad...and the lives of most of the characters so incredibly lonely and empty despite all the relationships that it hurt to watch them... long empty stretches... vignettes of lives not really lived. Last night at first I though that's what wasn't good about the movie.. that seemingly endless longing... waiting for something more complete... but I realize it has to be that way... I just want a more complete story...not the snapshots we get... of course that's what the characters wanted too... so that painful longing... if I'm feeling it I guess the job got done in this movie.

Heath Ledger ... extremely impressive performance (not that my opinion means much but that's my opinion)

:(

Well.. that's one of the reasons despite it being a fairly good film it will never be among my "faves" heartbreak and longing... not my favorite subject.. I admit to being in a phase of wanting the "typical happy ending" even though I know those everything turns out all right in the end movies aren't such great quality :)

i'm nervous to see this movie; i'd rather not cry in front of my friend but if she cries, then it might be a little bit more okay to shed a tear or two. :D

It's not a tear jerker.. which I do appreciate.. it wasn't emotionally manipulative.. but there is one scene that made me tear up.

Well it's not about "gay rights" anyway. But lets avoid THAT discussion so yet another brokeback mountain movie thread doesn't end up in ethics :)

On my list to see. I'm not listening to reviews. Although I'm sure I could be one of those people that the more a film is discredited the more I'll be up to view.

I haven't seen a bad review for this one.. I think some of them have been waaaaay over the top in their praise though..

some of the reviews have been hiliarous coming out of the christian related sites.

example: http://www.christianitytoday.com/movies/reviews/brokebackmountain.html
As for the 3-star rating, that is only in reference to the quality of the filmmaking, the acting, the cinematography, etc. It is not a "recommendation" to see the film, nor is it a rating of the "moral acceptability" of the subject matter.

they're not endorsing it per se but they think it's a fantastically well made movie.

Well, I just saw this movie and I have to say it's one of the best films I have seen in a while. I was thinking that this holiday season was pretty weak as far as movies have gone. Last year was awesome, with great films like "The Aviator" and "Million Dollar Baby."

I think the movie was pure brilliant filmmaking. Ang Lee has won me back after "Hulk." Lee has always been one of my favorites, but I never understood why he signed on for a superhero movie. It just didn't seem like him.

The brilliance in this movie lies in the fact that as I watched it, I felt something was missing from the film. I thought of several ways I would have done it different. I won't say because of spoilers, but there are a few things I would have done in another way. But afterwards, I realized that was the way I should have felt when I left the movie. I felt like something was missing, exactly how the characters felt throughout the entire movie.

I disagree that it wasn't a tear jerker. I cried and a lot of people in the packed theater were crying too. This is not Ang Lee's masterpiece, as nothing could top "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." But this is one of the best gay films ever made and it should be the film that wins Lee that over-deserved Oscar. Brilliant. I will probably see it more than once.

Four stars out of four.

Nobody was crying except for a couple specific spots at my local theater but to me a tear jerker is one where the story is created specifically to manipulate the emotions of the audience. I don't find this movie manipulative.. it tells the story and certainly draws out certain emotions but a tearjerker.. nope not to me.

I felt exactly as you did about the missing something... and it wasn't until looking at the complete picture that I realized while it drove me a bit nuts throughout the movie it was a very important element.

I will not be seeing any movie which promotes homosexuality, much less actually shows it.
whatever, your loss.

the movie was phenomenally well made and to see that the theater was actually packed was inspiring to know that there are people willing to see something that might make them uneasy but it really is the story itself that was amazing. two people in a repressed and fearful society and their longing made the world seem lonlier when you walk out of the dark and into the night air. it's a movie where you need some laughs after you get out. i'm glad i saw it.

I haven't nor am I intending to watch this crap. BUT, I read in the synopsis that one of the cowboys has a family and kids.

So, this means that this movie portrays a CORRECT message, which is that gay people are able to lead normal lives and have wives but choose to stray.

Actually both male leads end up married... they meet each other first.. before either gets married. But since you haven't seen the movie I don't think you can make any reasonable assessment of what message there is (if indeed there is any single message)
