  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've seen four British movies from beginning to end in my lifetime. All four have gotten a thumbs-up.

The Full Monty - About unumployed steel workers who put on an all-male nude revue to make money. Really funny bet pretty weird. It was also touching in a few scenes, although the British are very guarded with their emotions and the film reflected it. But a great movie nonetheless.

Billy Elliott - About a poor kid whose dad wants him to learn to box, but would rather learn to dance. By far one of the weirdest movies I've seen in my entire life. But like TFM, very touching and almost sad in a couple of places.

Bend it Like Beckham - About a young woman from an immigrant Indian family whose parents want her to become a proper Indian wife, but who would rather play soccer (or "football" if you want to get all British about it ;)). Definitely funny, and lacked the "weirdness" of the previous two movies on this list. And one of the best soundtracks ever.

Calendar Girls - True story about middle-aged British women who pose nude for a calendar to raise money for a hospital. At times I was rolling on the floor laughing and at times I was choking back tears. Highly recommended.

Any British movies that you'd like to comment on or recommend?

Snatch was terrific; Billy Elliot was touching; Full Monty was a very interesting film that had some sweet undertones and was comical. The British are experts at this sort of film, I think.

Zulu was also absolutely terrific; I thought that it was outstandingly done with Michael Cain. (Maybe this was produced by Hollywood but to me it stands out as British)
