CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

On a completely unrelated note: I visited a Russian-Christian church tonight and had lots of fun.

For a more serious matter, I was wondering if you believe in eternal security? For instance do you believe that a believer has the privilege to look forward to one day getting greeted by God to come into heaven, or does a person always have to wonder about that?

That's cool. Was it Russian Orthodox or a Protestant church whose parishoners just happened to be Russian?

In regards to your second question, Orthodox Christians believe that salvation is a process that is constantly being worked out. We believe that in order to receive salvation, one must do the following:

a) Accept Christ is Lord and Savior and repent of your sins
b) Be Baptised in the name of the Holy Trinity
c) Continue to live out your faith in Christ by faith and good works.

For many Protestants, it is a question faith versus works, but for the Orthodox, this opposition is foreign to us. We believe that salvation is granted by the mercy of God to righteous men and women. Those baptized into Christ were called to believe in Him and do good works.

For Orthodox Christians, faith is dynamic, not static. Faith is a living thing that is always growing, always changing, and not something that one excercises at one critical moment, expecting it to cover them the rest of his/her life. True faith is not just a decision; it's a way of life. Thus, Orthodox Christians see faith in at least three aspects (a) I have been saved, being joined to Christ in Holy Baptism. (b) I am being saved, growing in Christ through the sacramental life of the Church; and (c) I will be saved, by the mercy of God at the Last Judgment.

So in short, I will not know if I will reach heaven until I am there. :holy:

The above versions are in Church Slavonic, but we usually sing them in English or Ukrainian.

Usually though you'll find me rockin to some Classic rock or stuff from the sixties. I absolutely positively LOVE the Eagles!!! Lyin' Eyes is by far my favorite. I love the story telling in the lyrics, the guitar harmonies, and just the beauty of the song, despite the subject matter.

The short answer is that is not how we worship in the Orthodox faith.

The long answer, is that as Christianity was born of Judiasim, so the Orthodox faith follows a liturgical format of worship, just as the Ancient Jews did. Although the Bible cites examples of say, King David dancing in joy after he returned the Ark of the Covenant to its rightful home, the dancing was done outside the Temple, not inside during formal worship.

Thus, the Orthodox Church uses a liturgical style worship that is chanted accapella, just as the Ancient Jews did. What seperates us from them, however, is our faith in Christ, and the joy of the resurrection.

LOL, no no, we're not Messianic Jews.

After Christ's Ascension into heaven, the Apostles went out and founded the Church. Up until 1054 AD, there was only one Church, and it was run by several different popes/patriarchs: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jeruselum. All of the Bishops were "first amongst equals," no single one being head. Well, Rome wanted to change all that (and a couple other things) so in 1054 the East and the West split. What was left was what is now known as the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

While we do not celebrate Jewish holidays or anything like that, Christian worship is rooted in the liturgical worship of the Old Testament. (See the book of Exodus for descriptions of how the Temple was adorned, priests vestments were to be made, etc.)

Thus, the Eastern Othodox Church is contemporary worship; 4th Century style. :cool:
