  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Amen to that. My really good friend's goal in life (up until 3 months ago, when she "accomplished" it) was to meet Conor. Now it's to become Mrs. Conor Oberst. I mean, he's kind of attractive in that malnourished stray puppy kind of way, but still. That's just weird to want to marry a guy who you've only met once.

Yeah, good point. The thing is that lyrics either hit you or they don't; what's cliched and obvious to one person will be moving to another. It doesn't really matter who's "right"; what does matter is finding music that moves you.

Yeah, that particular verse isn't exactly moving, but I don't necessarily think it's not good because of that. He does have moving songs, like "Song To Pass the Time".

And I agree with you about Digital Ash...with the exception of Easy/Lucky/Free it's pretty much tossable.

And, I do find Conor's major lyrical sin to be lack of subtlety. His lyrics are too forceful, too weighty. Nietzsche would say that he needs to teach his words to dance.

Yes, well we can't expect Conor to be as good as Nietzsche. You only get people that poetic every few hundred years or so.

I'm reading a biography on him right now...his life is just as interesting as his philosophy.

Who is the author? I tried reading a biography of Nietzsche earlier this summer (because the local library must not find any of his actual writings to be worth purchasing) but I dropped it in the middle because it was labored reading.

I haven't read much in the way of Nietzsche biographies, but I know enough about Walter Kaufmann and R.J. Hollingdale to recommend both of their works, Jacob. Especially Kaufmann.

I think the one I started was by Hollingdale. The research that was put into it was admirable, but I was disappointed by the lack of discussion on Nietzsche's philosophy. Then again, that may have been discussed later. I might give it a shot again once I get a little time.

I recently got back into Huxley's "The Doors of Perception". Did you ever get your hands on it?

You should read Kaufmann's. While a lot of it is given to tearing down misconceptions of Nietzsche (that he was an anti-Semite, and others), which are important in their own right, it has (from what I've read of it) a very good exposition of all the facets of Nietzsche's thought.

clicky.

I went to Barnes and Noble one night and read the first 20 pages or so of it, and was very interested. I've yet to give it a thorough look, though, but it looked good, and was of course very well written.

And another successful thread derailment is completed.

Three more and I get a set of steak knives.
