I thought of this thread as I read the following psalm where David prays for his pleas to be acceptable. May God guide our mouths, and guard the door of our lips, that we avoid wickedness. May we avoid the tasty dainties of the wicked.
Psalms 141:1-4 (KJV) 1 LORD, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee. 2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. 3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. 4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.

I too remember a similar story (preacher I think instead of rabbi) illustrating the impossibility of rectifying the wrongs we can do with our tongues...
Your sister in Christ,
EarthMomma
I too heard a similar story - about nails in a fence - I'm going to try to find it. Thank you EarthMomma, for your comments. There is so much power in the spoken word.
And thank you BLUEEYEANGEL for such a lovely thread.

Here's the story I was talking about. I think this story impacted my life as much as any I've ever heard:

The Nails and the Fence
There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper and shouted in anger, to hammer a nail in the back fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Then it gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one.

what a great lesson here. This has been my desire always.I know that life and death are in the power of the tongue. We create or destroy stuff by what we say.My desire is to only bless and never curse.give life and hope with my words. For a man who knows what to say when is wise.Thank God that he is the giver of wisdom.Im still far but I wont let up!

To know to do good ,and doeth it not is a sin.

Wow I come short everyday.
Not willingly, tho..
Now there is time I know, and act upon.
Lord forgiveme, I have to ask,
and not do it again.

Some folks, may ask and KNOW they are going back and do the same thing again.
This is practicing sin.
wow danger grounds there.

There has been times on the spair of a moment
someone may say something, and I comment back to them,
with a split second before knowing I should't
say that, I go ahead and do it anyway. This is wrong.
I willingly did that , when the holy spirit
spoke to me and say don't say that.
I have to ask , Lord forgive me bridle this toungue.
not cursing Im talking about, thanks be to God ,
never practice that.
Oh yea I have heard a lot of christian say I love you Lord
and then curse in the next sentence.
I am always saying how can this be,
are they unaware?
ignortant to the word.?
Maybe it is just ppl get in a comfort zone ,
are they just happy being there.
Beware
Cause , the bible tells us sweet and bitter water don't come from the same fountain.

I was a resturant tonight and had to get up
from where my husband and I was sitting,
and we move to a different section,
because of three men,
cursing every breath.
It made me sick to my stomach.
I wanted to tell them so bad in a nice way.
how Jesus loves them and etc.
I would have but by my husband being there,
out of the three... one would have probally got smart
with me then my husband would have been
tangling with them .
So God had me just to get up and switch tables.
He was talking and thanks be to God , he was not paying them no attention.
I tryed to tune the out , but I was thinking my,
my I know they are doin this around their children and no respect for anyone,
they sure had none,
for them self.

There is christian, that take not a thought to this. Using these words.
When the bible says our tounges are like deadly poison
this is so true.
We can kill ppl, with these tounges. (Not literally.)
Spiturally
I have seen right here at christian forms ,
words said to one another.
That could are have cut so deeply, ppl has left
because of things beening said.
My, My , Lord help me never to stand accused
of doing this.
How do we know when one leaves,
this forum because of getting hurt by another,
Just when God was fixing to open a door ,
to a groweth in the christian life.
That we stood in the way, and we offended them
willingly, when we know we could have prevented
it.
you know when most ppl leave a church, because for what ever reason.
More then half stop going anywhere, and turn their back on God.
We can't stop all that may go though something of this matter when we unaware,
but if we know and can
be the one, shame on us, if we don't because of pride
or anything that may get in the way.

I just want to remind each, lets all Be Christ like
and help each other in our daily walk, not to offend no one.

Lord knows I need reminded, of his word.
I thank God when he lays it on ones heart to post.
A lot of times, I say thanks Lord for reminding me.
So I think all you right now for being lead by God
and making those post , that I stand in need of.

Blueeyeangel,
I agree with you 100%! God bless you for reminding us to be conscientious of how we respond to others with our words, and may I add actions and attitude. I find myself guilty of offending others with my words and actions at times. I try to become aware of these wrongful ways, so I may confess and change with God's help. It is sad that many professing to be christians have attacked with unloving comments towards those who do not believe the same way. We offend even others in Christ. Let us all consider God's ways according to Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-18 So be careful how you live...as those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days. Don't act thoughtlessly, but try to understand what the Lord wants you to do. ...let the Holy Spirit fill and control you. Galatians 5:22-26 But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. ... If we are living now by the Holy Spirit, let us follow the Holy Spirit's leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or irritate one another, or be jealous of one another. Galatians 6:10 Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone, especially to our Christian brothers and sisters. 2 Timothy 4:2 ....Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage...with good teaching. Proverbs 12:18 Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. Proverbs 15:4 Gentle words bring life and health.... We need to remember to not grieve the Holy Spirit, but always try to glorify God who graciously loves us all.

thanks for a great thread, and for your scriptures Daniels!

There's hope for the tongue, if we speak His Word and praise Him!

Psalms 119:171-172 (KJV) 171 My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes. 172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.
Lifting the praise of thanksgiving for those here who love His Word, may He guide our tongues to His glory!
