  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Breed specific legislation

Is this moral or acceptable?

There is news of legislation in California that requires pet owners to neuter their pets. To date, Denver has seized 1,000 "pitbull-looking-dogs", and killed many of them. Every couple months or so we hear of some kid getting mauled by a neighbor pit, or his own pit, and feel-good moron talk of killing all our dogs.

All I have to say is this, I own a pit, and should anyone attempt to take my pit, and kill him, well, to hell with the pit, you better about my. Dog will just bite you. I, on the other hand, own more guns than dogs.

You, sir, are awesome.

I wrote my term paper on Breed Specific Legislation - and I say a pox upon it. Pitbulls are adorable.

Awww Theo is adorable. I think breed-specific legislation is a bad idea. It's a lot like banning guns. It isn't the dog that's inherently bad, it's how they are handled. Taking these beloved breeds away from responsible, loving pet owners is sad. BTW, below is a picture of our Bull Mix, Penny and her litter of puppies :)

Awww.

I love Theo. He's my favorite dog we've had. I work at a dog daycare; essentially put 20 - 40 dogs in a 2400 square foot room with 1 - 3 people depending on the group size and let them play. And put plenty of balls, tables, and toddler beds around.

As a joke, we put together Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, and started placing dogs on it. We have several self-actualized dogs. A self-actualized dog, as we placed it, were the dogs were comfortable enough upon introductions to roll on their back and let all the other dogs sniff them, never get into fights, never hump, no guarding, and no fear-based aggression. Not only that, but they must play well with others and be social dogs; the ones that hide in the corner and don't do anything don't count.

With that in mind, we narrowed it down to Jonas (Golden Retriever), Ketchum (Chocolate Labrador Retriever), Maximus [awesome name] (Golden Retriever), and Theo (American Pit Bull Terrier).

And here is a video of Theo:

Who plays well with the puppies? Theo plays well with the puppies. <3

(Yes, I'm smitten, shush.)

how is killing a living and smart creature like forbidding a weapon?

As the co-owner of a number of pits I have to say that they are wonderful dogs. Were there not so many mounds of human refuse that abused pits and forced them to fight then people would be able to admire this strong, loyal and loving breed for what they are not what they are abused into being.

The results are different, but the motivation behind them is the same. Take away a privilege from law-abiding, responsible citizens because of the bad, irresponsible actions of a rogue group of people who wish to do harm. There are people who use guns to kill other people and there are people who use "bully breed" dogs for ill gain - sport fighting for profit, for one. Instead of focusing in on those who wish to bring harm to others, the government tries to impose an outright criminalization. It's a shame.

Nope, not moral or acceptable.

Most people can't properly identify the breeds they want banned and use the term "pit bull" to identify a number of breeds and mixes that look similar.

Here is a fun test. Find the pit bull. ( It took me two tries, but that is only because I've played similar "find the pit bull" games before)

i'm not going to start a debate about guns simply because the concept of the right of owing a gun is so far from my culture that i don't think makes sense for me discussing this with americans.
my point was that i think the main problem of this law is not the forbidding something issue, but the ending a life issue. it's a lot like death penalty, at best.
