  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I used to keep up on this issue but haven't lately. I am completely against breed banning, as it doesn't get rid of the problem and condems many innocent dogs. I'm wondering if this type of legislation has at least slowed or is it still spreading? I had heard that other countries, and other US states and cities were considering this type of legislation. So I'm eager to hear opinions, thoughts, experiences on this issue.

I hate the idea of banning certain breeds. All its going to do is destroy the breed. The reason they want to do it is to try to get rid of the "unsafe" breeds, but all they're really going to do is stop the responsible (and legal) breeders. People who want to own those breeds will get a hold of them and since they're illegal, they won't be taken to the vet, they won't be socialized, and they're probably going to be the lowest quality. Because the people who shouldn't be owning the breed now owns them, its all that will be bred and the breed will be ruined. Instead, i think that when people register their dog with the county any breed that is known for being aggressive must under go temperment testing yearly or bi-yearly or something like that and then the people can ONLY keep them if they pass. If the dog is deemed overly aggressive, it should be put down. Period. Also, if a county officer sees a dog that is of a breed that is known to be aggressive, they should be able to demand their county reg. papers and if the owner doesn't have them, the dog taken.
Ok, this isnt something that i've thought a lot about, and i'm sure there are some flaws in it. Even with as little thought as i've put into it, i'm sure its better then banning the breeds completely

Unfortunately,
Breed legislation is comon in cities.

Just because some breeds are more prone to abuse doesn't mean the breed is bad.

Rottweilers and Pit bulls seem to be the most comon "bad breeds".
Unless taught or raised violent Rottweilers are very friendly animals. At least the ones I have seen.
Pit bulls are very close to being a restricted breed. I do beleive they are breeding the
aggressive and largest animals to be a fighting dog. The original breed was loyal but
vicious in it's fighting style. But now the specially bred dogs are dangerous to anyone.
But the breed is still a good pet if treated correctly and not just bred to fight.

Our county just started a new law to license cats here. This cost of licensing them, and forcing people to pay up and above neutering and spaying will probably mean a lot of cats will be taken to the pound. We do have low cost neutering here, and that surely goes a long way in controlling population control. However, this will put responsible breeders (of show cats) in a bind, and probably force them out of doing their breeding good pedigree cats sooner or later. I'm totally against government taking a hand in this type of thing, as it never works the way it is intended.

I support banning certain breeds, such as dog-wolf breeds. Dog/wolf hybrids are much too dangerous, and all of them should be euthanized. Or they should all be neutered/spayed and live out their remaining lives in some sort of rescue center for exotic animals.

i'll agree with DW, wolf hybrids should be banned, but i don't think they should be euthanized right away. I feel that if they have a decent temperment, they should be spayed or neutered and left to live out the rest of their lives in a sanctuary. if the animal happens to be mean and aggressive, then yes they should be put down. But, i think that about any dog-no matter what breed.
