Breastfed for a while, then quit....

For those of you who breastfed for a while and then quit for whatever reason, when did you get your period back? I breastfed for 3 1/2 weeks and I still don't have a period and Maya is now 4 months old

Hi Leanna,
I was never regular to begin with so this may not help you, but it tooks MONTHS for my period to return after breastfeeding. Probably about 6 months, and then after that I was the most regular I've ever been in my life... a period every 1 to 2 months.
Are you possibly pregnant?

I have the opposite problem, breastfeed but period returns anyway. So I'm just chiming in to say I'm jealous.

Leanna- have you checked with your midwives?? They might wanna do a quick sonogram to make sure you don't have a molar pregnancy or some such. You could also try an emmenagouge--do you have Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year ??

LOL! It's herbs to promote menstrual flow--pennyroyal, blue/black cohosh, tansy, ginger, angelica root-- and the like. I haven't researched it, but there are probably tinctures(etc.) available online.

Leanna, you might want to get your hormone levels checked as it sounds like you're a little "off" in the estrogen department. Typically, you should start your cycles again when solids are introduced or the baby starts nursing less (especially at night). Since you're not cycling at all right now and haven't nursed for nearly 3 months, I'd probably check with your OB/GYN. It Is normal for Some women, but it's not common.

Okay so the midwife says that very slight women will sometimes have long periods of no cycle and I shouldn't worry about it. No idea how long it will be. I'm still worrying about it though.... !

My mom was in the same boat as you and got her period back at 4.5 months.

Even with my very very irregular cycles.... skipping months at a time, there is no cause for concern. I've been checked out and its just how it is. Hasn't affected my fertility (praise the Lord), and just means nasty hormonal mood swings sometimes, lol

My periods were never regular to start with and after having my first baby and stopping bf it was a year before my period started. I could also still express milk for that whole year if I sqeezed!
My second was born 11 years later and my period started 2 weeks after stopping bf. It has been regular as clockwork ever since, weird huh?

Sounds about right for when DH and I want to start trying again (well not that we are preventing right now, we're just not using teh drugs) So we can be TTC buddies
