Over 20 states now have announced the need to wear masks in public with Texas and Colorado joining the list!

An increasing number of retail businesses have joined Walmart in requiring that their customers wear masks to protect those around them!

As Republican politicians and American businesses continue to make public pronouncements about the need for masks, this President has marooned himself on an island of one!

...except Georgia Gov Kemp who just filed suit against the Mayor of Atlanta...for, get this, her mandatory mask order. He asserted her policy leads to loss of income.

(....or might it have something to do with power? At least Arizona Gov Ducey had the good sense to let the state's city mayors decide after COVID went wild in our state).

I do see you highlighting the usual scientific terms which are often conservative and don't over-reach on their conclusions. But overall I don't see the problem here.

My issue isn’t with the people who have legit medical conditions that make wearing a mask problematic. If you have legit reasons to not wear a mask that’s fine. If you are pretending to have legit reasons to not wear a mask but the real reason is you just don’t want to wear a mask, then in my opinion you are scum and don’t deserve to live on civilized society. I can’t tell the difference between the two in public. But I can voice my opinion of them here because I know people like that do exist. Look at the abuse of service dog rules.

There are people who need service dogs and I have no problem with that. Then there are people who don’t need service dogs but take advantage of the rules and have their dog that is clearly not trained to be a service dog and use the rule to take them anywhere they please even though the dog is not trained for that nor do they need the dog for that.

I'm trying to figure out how we aren't going to starve from all this nonsense. My 5'5" wife was just reprimanded, at 7/11 mind you, that she must refuse service to anyone that doesn't wear a mask. Alone. On the night shift. She has to get confrontational to God knows who, to complete strangers, in the middle of the night completely by herself just to run a cash register. She might be 110 lbs. Now she has to be the face mask police to keep her job?

I understand that debating science is not necessarily easy for non-scientists. But this is how it is done. You wish to limit the discussion to the size of a bare, isolated virus particle. But that isn't what we are talking about. The infection from RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS appears to include fluids.

When you cough do you understand that there is fluid involved as well? The key here (if you read the science) is that the virus particles are entrained in the fluid which is how the masks can help lower the burden of virus that hits your body. Sure a few bare, isolated virus particles may also be in the mix but the goal here is to reduce the overall viral load.

So OF COURSE the discussion is going to be around what medium the particles are in!

Can you show me a reference about respiratory-based transmission of a virus in which the normal respiratory materials (bodily fluids, water, etc) are NOT important to the process?

The way we aren’t going to starve is by wearing masks, washing our hands, staying home when we can, and social distance. That’s how we are going to suppress this virus and avoid more business shutdowns. It’s on all of us to do this. If we are willing to sacrifice now we can get our normal lives back. We did it during World War II we can do it again. But it takes all of us. A group of unpatriotic people unwilling to do what is necessary is going to prevent it from happening. You don’t want to work to get us back to normal then you have no one to blame but yourself when the virus gets more out of control and we get more shutdowns. The choice is yours.

I wouldn't want to be in her position as described. If I were working a night shift a 7/11 I wouldn't antagonize anyone if only for personal safety issues. That is an issue for the management of the company or the franchisee who owns this store.

Either way the best way forward is to actually listen to the science and if we all work together to do the simple actions that will help us get ahead of this we can get back to normal where people don't have to fight over these things.

Even if one doesn't like science or doesn't understand science we should encourage these people to take the advice of the actual professionals. It may not be perfect but it's better than nothing. And the sooner we do that the better chance we will have to get back to normal.

I wish your wife well in navigating this weird time. She should NOT have to put her life in danger to force some drunk or crazy person to do the right thing in the middle of the night without any support or security for herself.

I have even broken this down by OSHA, CDC, and NIOS standards. You cannot filter something smaller than a masks MPPS. That is as small as it can stop. Wet, cold, round, dry... doesn't matter. A N95 does not filter smaller than .3 microns. There is no super duper science that somehow makes it safe to try and filter something half the size of what it is rated for. I'm sorry, but either he is arguing just to argue or simply will not agree.
