• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey there guys,

I am a normal poster in the Non-Denominational boards and am a first time poster in these boards.

I too have OCD and it has caused me nothing but heartache and suffering. Sometimes I feel that I have fallen too far and will never achieve salvation and that I should just give up on the faith.

I had a breakdown in church today and am still trying to recover from it.

If anyone has any advice, please help.

Hi Star Trek,
Please always remember that the emotional distress of our OCD does not speak any truth as to our actual standing in Christ. That doesn't mean that it's not painful and very, very scary.
The best advice I can offer is to learn how to manage your OCD strictly as a disorder and not a spiritual problem. That means that you will have to apply the techniques of exposure to the thoughts and response prevention. That's very hard to do when it latches onto something like our standing with Christ. But do it we must or we can't learn to manage the disorder. Learning to let the thoughts be there without seeking reassurance about them takes a lot of will power and depending on how debilitated you are by it you may need professional help and or medication until you get better. I've had to do that and I've never regretted my decision. Big scary step but well worth it.
Praying for you,
Mitzi

Hi there,

I just wanted to give you a virtual hug--I know how hard it is to deal with the OCD stuff and to feel doubtful. BUT did you know that several religious icons including Saint Therese, John Bunyan and Martin Luther, and others are all thought to have suffered from mild to severe OCD? I'm reading this great book called, "Can Christianity Cure Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?" by Ian Osborn, MD. It's a little heavy (dry read in parts) but fascinating to learn more about these people who I think of as so righteous and God-fearing who dealt with some similar problems that I'm dealing with. You might want to check out the book.

Please, don't give up.
