Bread Alone

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.


Level on level on level of thought...in one verse. Truly, it is the living Word. It grows as we mature.

Man, in order to survive, must have literal bread/food but he won't live eternally without our Father.

Man, in order to live must have bread/the written Word but it alone isn't enough to "live" eternally.

We must have bread/the letter of the word and we must have the Spirit teach us the meaning of the letter....which is "every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God."

The letter is written and seen/understood on one level. What gives us eternal life is the spirit of the Word that we receive from the mouth of God.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.


2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

How does He speak to us? He opens understanding of His written Word....He gives the letter...life.

Luke 24: 15-35 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.
... “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. ...Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”...
(they had the facts)

He said to them, “How foolish you are,..And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
(but they needed it to be explained)... but it wasn't enough they needed to "see"

As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them....
(they urged.. Him to stay ... why??... because there hearts were burning)

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
(the revealing at the table, the giving of the bread)

They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread....
( what do they proclaim... TRUTH)...

They were walking with Him, but yet they didn't recognise Him (as the Bread of Heaven), until He gave them the bread (explained the scriptures), and bread (communion at the table)...

the manna was like honey..

Exodus 16:31 And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.

1sam 1:27-29 ... Then answered one of the people, and said, Your father straightly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eats any food this day. And the people were faint. Then said Jonathan, My father has troubled the land: see, I pray you, how my eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

We become faint when not having "that bread, that taste like honey"...but our eyes and hearts are enlightened when "we eat"... it strengthens us for the defeating of those that war against us...
