I know this probably exists somewhere here already but I'm at work and can't surf too long.

Is there a good, impartial resource either in book or online form that details the various types of Christianity and their basic tenants, history and reason for being?

Thanks,
Kel
Hi Kelly,

Other than searching individual denominations, you might try reading on this site....

[Moderator (NYJ) note: We do not allow links to that site as it promotes Wiccanism]

And... if you have any questions on a particular denomination, you have 400+ people online right now to answer your questions.... :D

I know this most likely doesn’t apply to you,

But if it is looking for a church that you are doing, I may be able to help. At my website (still under development) I am just starting to put together a “The church you agree with” section where you can take a test and it will point you to all the churches that teach a practice what you believe. Since I’m mining all this information out anyways. Then I figure you might need the service a little early. So if you want and the reason you need this is cause you want to find a church, Just send me an email or PM with what your looking for and I can send you a list of churches which teach and practice that, if you give me your city I can give you only the ones in your city.

I just thought I should offer just in case, but I understand if you don’t take me up,

God bless,
Datsar

So Christianity is about what we believe, and what feels comfortable to us? We can really pick a church based on how it agrees with what we think? I thought we were to conform our will to His, not His to ours.

I think he might have been referring to which denominations adhere more closely to the essential Christian doctrines in the Bible. Please cut the sarcasim.

No, that's not what he said... go back and reread it.

And I quote:

Well then nyj,

Why don't you just visit his web site. It will be much better than your criticism.
Umm, because 1. He didn't give a link, and 2. He said it was still under development. Kind of hard to visit something which doesn't yet exist.

My site is for Christians who wish to challenge them selves and learn more about God, Jesus and History. It welcomes many different Christians from many different denominations and belief systems. It is for Christians similar to Kelly here who wishes to explore their options. Honor and worship for the lord comes in many forms, ways, understanding is key, and that is what the focus is about. My coming site does not endures some church beliefs (if they are too far out there), it does give a chance for those denominations to defend them selves and be accepted if they prove their point, but the site will not purposefully help or assist in misguiding people.

That section that I am designing and was talking about is for people who have broke off from their current church denomination for whatever reason, Like me or Kelly. As believes and followers in Christ we deserve to find and worship God in a way we see appropriate (yes understanding of the bible from our POV), In order to do this we must know which church believes the right practice(in our eyes), we want to avoid getting into unwanted situations, we want to stand together united not apart and alone. Btw the questions will not be on fundamental stuff, but on matters that have to do with worship and teachings.

I am sorry if I gave too general a description, I was thinking I got my point across.

I've never seen a thread where nyj makes kind or encouraging comments. I wouldn't take it personally, I think that's just his way.

Your site sounds interesting - if there were something similar for my city, I'd definitely have a look.

My beliefs are solidly based in the Bible, my morals formed around Catholic doctrine (catechism) but I haven't yet found a church where I feel really comfortable. And I think it's important to feel comfortable in our fellowship.

You completely right, emmajane. But don't make excuse for him. He should know better and he does. He's looking for a fight. But he has aleady lost his witness b/4 many.

Good post nyj !

Christianity is not about finding a church where you feel good or that agrees with your take on what the Gospel is. If that were all it was, anyone with a big wallet and charisma could start a church and there would be thousands of different denominations believing different things.

I half agree with you.

The suggestion regarding new denominations is silly... I'm in no position to judge differences between doctrines / denominations. But as far as BELIEFS are concerned, we have a fairlysolid backdrop - the Bible.

I do maintain, however, that one needs to feel peaceful in ones faith. This may well be based on an individual's background. My nearest church is a 'free church.' I love their ideas, but I feel uncomfortable with their waving of arms and their spontaneous shouting, etc. So I don't worship there. Equally, my local Catholic church is Orthodox. I don't understand Latin mass, I don't enjoy that there is no music, I don't wear a headcovering.

So faith, beliefs - yes. They should be Christian.
But doctrine, methods of worship - it is not my place to judge, but neither is it my place to unquestionably accept what makes me feel uncomfortable.

Ooops, what I meant to say was:

If that were all it was, anyone with a big wallet, charisma, their own interpretation of Scripture, could start a church

Don't believe me, watch the Anglican denomination, right now. The thousands of denominations all have the same Bible, do they all belive the same thing ? Which is right ? Which is wrong ? How do you as a Christian know ? If all you need is the Bible, and just the Bible, why is not everyone who is following the Spirit in the same Church ?
