  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Bee Gees don't count because they wrote their own songs, played instruments, and weren't a manufactured band. The Monkees were manufactured though, so could be regarded as the first boy band.

I disagree with your definition of a "boy band". It is a group of attractive young men who are marketed to attract young girls...with a lot of love songs. Billboard has the Osmond Brothers listed as a boy band before the Monkees.

I sort of believe that groups like the Temptations were the roots of modern boy bands. The choreography didn't matter as much until tv became common place and then MTV in the 80's gave bands a reason to become more of a visual experience. I will grant that at least at the time of this filming that they weren't "boys" anymore.

You're right there - that would be the main characteristic of boy bands, but the things I mentioned are part of it - a band that is marketed towards young girls is going to tend to be a vocal group who has little input into the songwriting process, and who didn't form in a natural manner. That's not to say that all boy bands meet those criteria (some of the earlier ones did have more musical input than the later crop of boy bands would have), but if a band doesn't meet any of them then they're probably not a boy band.

Billboard has the Osmond Brothers listed as a boy band before the Monkees.

I thought the Osmonds came after the Monkees, but it turns out they didn't, so they'd be better candidates for being the first boy band.

I think you're right. The choreography obviously became a lot more elaborate, but that clip definitely shows the template for the modern boy band.

Like most groups or singers, they sing songs both written by others and themselves. Justin Timberlake co-wrote "Gone". Harry Styles co-wrote "Where do Broken Hearts Go" and "Stockholm Syndrome". Zayn Malik wrote several songs including "Story of my Life". People in music usually love music and can play at least one instrument and have at least attempted to write songs. Some people are just better at it than others. I suspect that the reason more boy bands don't sing their own music is that they are young when the groups are formed and they tend to write more when they are older and moving in to solo careers and can express their individual tastes of music.

My favorite song by Backstreet Boys when I was a kid was "Don't Want You Back".
I was never super into boy bands... but all my friends were.... so of course I had a couple CDs.
