There's a poll asking this in the UK Forum, wondered what the response would be here.

Would you die for your faith? If someone put a gun to your head and asked you were you Catholic, saying they would shoot you if you were, would you deny your faith?

Many of them said no. I said I would, and that I would also die, as did a young girl in Korea, to protect the Blessed Sacrament.

I would hope that I would have the faith to die for my faith, but I guess I would not know until such a time presented itself to me. A good friend of mine, Fr. John Kaiser MHM, did in fact do such a thing when he was martyred by the Kenyan Government in August 2000. May God grant him memory eternal.

It would be nice to say "yes" right now, but I honestly know that if I was in that situation, I would say "no." Because I would not think like that, I would be thinking of survival. As bad as it sounds as bad as that might make me sound, I know that's what I would honestly do. Is that a good thing on my part? Probably not, buts at least the truth.

The girl at Columbine that said "yes" and then they shot her, I've often though what I would say, and honestly I would not say "yes." I would think of my parents and my brothers and I would say "no."

Would they still shoot you though...I guess that's the other question....

I hope so, but I can see it being too hard for me - maybe God would be willing to help me? I think I'd have to say something similar to princess_ballet: I'm afraid I'd say no. But I think it also depends on what the situation is. I think there are also cases where I would say yes, especially if I've had time for meditation and prayer ahead of time. I know that there is someone whom I would die for if it would affect whether or not he is with me in Heaven, and so if I believed dying for my faith would be witness to him, (I think) I would do so. But in a more abstract case where he isn't invovled, just me and faith . . . ugh . .. I may have to plead the fifth. But the devotion to be willing to die for God is something to pray for.

I think the question in the opening post is a bit tricky. I think more people would be prepared to die for their faith then there would be people who would be prepare to die for the question if you were a catholic.

I can imagine priests dying to be able to deliver the sacraments. I can imagine myself going to mass illegally where catholicism is forbidden, and risking death by doing so. I can imagine dying doing deeds inspired by faith or for my faith.
But if someone comes up to me in the street tomorow with a gun and tells me he's going to shoot me if I'm catholic, I'll probably claim not to be. Not because of the difference between reality and imagining, but because I do not think at that moment I would see... sense or Gods purpose in such a death, while I would see purpose in risking death to be able to attend mass.

I believe that right now for me I can honestly answer Yes to that question....
The reason...because I know that I would be doing what the Lord expected of me even until the end which would mean that I persevered and kept the Faith in the Hope that because of that I would then be with Him in His Loving care...and I cannot think of a better place to be.

I think it depends for me how I was feeling that day and how the occasion came upon me.
I get scared when I am at the top of the fairground ride, just at the point of going down,

when you are at the bottom it often like "that ride will be easy, I won't be scared" but then as you see from the top of the ride the perspective is different, you see the hieght differently and you realise how frightend you are.
