Sample rephrasing:

What is boredom for psychology?

What is boredom for philosophy?

What is boredom for laity?

What is boredom? What IS it?

You don't think certain phenomenon are best investigated by certain people?

My dad used to say, "if you're bored, its because you're boring."

And in my dreams, I'm extremely boring

And in my friendships I'm... I'm apparently so boring, my friends all bail on me eventually.

But boredom engages something I think. It doesn't lend itself to an opposite quite well enough to get a good definition by the comparison, and in that sense (only in that sense) it does seem like boredom is a "spiritual" thing - in the sense that it eludes (I guess by its "nature")

So boring

Some thoughts:

Not finding enough affirmation in the things you're doing, so you choose not to do the things that are not affirming. Some people feel affirmed when they're generous, so they don't see helping as a waste of time, and seldom feel bored.

Some people like to explore every possibility, while others feel like there are too many imposed limits on their lives for them to explore or step out... so then the limitation feels like boredom.

Ennui can come from anger too -- a quiet inner spite that others have controlled for too long, so they don't want happiness to prove the other person right. (Like Dad saying, "Joining swim club will be fun!" or "You'll feel more clear-headed if you clean your room.")

Or jealousy. Determination that everyone else has more than you, so you're going to prove how miserable that can feel.

The listlessness of boredom can be real, physiological lack of mental energy.

What is boredom?

Etymology unknown, but Walker Percy tries to relate it to "borere", which means "to stuff". Boredom, says Percy, means to be "stuffed with oneself." That is, having no attention directed toward something outside itself, consequentially left with paying attention to the self, which is a very boring thing to pay attention to.

In a deeper sense, boredom is despair. Here I'm being fancy and going Kierkegaard (Percy's master, incidentally). Despair in his specific sense: the loss of hope that comes with not being the self God calls you to be, or in secular terms not living according to your meanings or values in your life. The really driven people, who have a purpose that goes beyond booze and women, never get bored; they always have something to do, plan, think about, etc.

In this sense, boredom is diet depression.

Having a "want" that is going unfulfilled. Monks are known to sit and meditate for hours on end... but they don't get bored because they have trained themselves to not want.

I actually find that when I'm bored I have no idea what I want. And that's the problem.

I actually find that when I'm bored I have no idea what I want. And that's the problem.

With six children, boredom is almost a constant because the distraction alone is enough to make me forget what I was thinking of (if I was even being creative or engaged to begin--

Hang on my oldest son is interrupting me

"Sore throat? I cant afford cough drops...try cinnamon and honey."

What was I saying...

Okay, yeah. I'm bored constantly, even though I'm NEVER AT REST
