What books are you reading or do you recommend reading on pregnancy/parenthood?

Dr. Sears' The Baby Book is good. I don't agree with Everything, but it's an excellent basic. Actually, all of Dr. Sears' books are good... very down to earth.

Penny Simkin's Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn is good...

Well at the risk of looking foolish...

Since DH and I started TTC anytime I've heard someone mention a good book, I've written it down for when the time comes I know how pathetic eh?

Now I'm sure most of these wouldn't be relevant to you (at least not yet...) but there might be some good ones for you.

Also, I've heard from many, many, many, MANY women do NOT read the "what to expect" books.

So while I can't say if they are any good or not, I highly trust the opinions of those who mentioned the books (most are from my SIL.)

Ohhh I like that list though I haven't read a lot of them, I really like Montessori too but then you would know that

Ooooo thank you sooo much for all these suggestions! I know that I've ran into soem different perspectives on pregnancy as far as what to do & not do. So it gets confusing.

There are different perspectives on pregnancy because there are different ways to approach pregnancy and childbirth.

There are those who want to do everything as natural as possible, so they want books to support them & educate them in Those choices. And on the flip-side, there are women who want their doctors to do all the decision making, so they want books to only give them the basics. And then of course there are all the women inbetween those 2 extremes.

You need to decide where You fit, and then go from there. Usually that means more reading and educating yourself, but you'll find where you are comfortable pretty quickly, IMO.

That's true, if you want an unmedicated birth, there are some books I would definitely recommend.

I wonder why the What to Expect books are not so popular? As far as the pain I think I will be opting for some form of relief.

I think because the pregnancy focuses on a lot of bad things that could happen so it can make some mamas feel paranoid. The what to expect the first year is .... well it could be replaced by a lot of better books. Its just so dry.... I think the pregnancy one is a lot better than the baby ones though. Your Pregnancy Week By Week I liked better because of the pictures of the baby.

I haven't read any of the Dr. Sears baby or pregnancy books although I have browsed them at the bookstore, but I imagine they are good just because I really like his book The Healthiest Kid In The Neighborhood. I really recommend that book!Although like jgonz we don't parent entirely the way Dr. Sears talks about....

Einstein Never Used Flashcards is an interesting book, I remember it starts out talking about all of the fancy contraptions and "learning tools" available for babies and then talks about the best things you can do for your little ones. I liked it, its not exactly a "parenting" book though... but I am interested in education.

I totally agree with books making ya feel paranoid. It's already bad enough trying to be careful with what ya do & don't do. I'll have to check those other books out when I get back to feeling better. I knowo On Oprah the other day this lady had a interesting DVD out that talked about babies and the sounds they make as to what it means. It was really neat!

I LOVE The Birth Book by Dr. Sears.

I also recommend Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and Henci Goer's Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Childbirth. I would read both with a grain of salt, but they offer some good advice.

Oh, and this is a novel, but The Red Tent is a good "embrace your childbirthing-ness" read.

Congratulations
Expecting A Miracle by Todd Hilton is a great book for expectant parents. Each page gives a milestone in the pregnancy while offering a scripture and a prayer for the day's events. For example on day 21 when it speaks about the baby's heart starting to beat, the scripture is "above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life" Proverbs 4:23. And the prayer for that day is to bless your miracle with a strong Godly heart. There is also a journal section on each page. This book is a great way to develop a prayer life with your child even before his or her birth.
