I was asked by a poster here to start a BofM study group and was wondering if any would be interested.

Prior to answering I need to say that its not intended to "convert" those non-LDS posters its was meant as a familiarization tool, I think.

I also need to mention I don't want a mud-slinging contest regarding this thread and this goes for both sides of the fence.

I welcome thought out critisism or commendation of the passages that will be posted.

Does this sound like an endeavor some here may be willing to do?

Additionally I not trying to set forth a comprehensive lists of DOs and DON'Ts, I would think that those as professing Christians can act in a civil manner one to another.

If you feel I missed a prerequisite for starting this thread, please let me know.

Thanks,

Tom

What kind of discussion?
Passage by passage?
A debate concerning its veracity? (circumstances of its translation/authorship and publication? Overall content? Predictions? Native American customs, etc?)
Comparison with other world religions' sacred texts?
I've read it 10 to 15 times. I'd love to be a part.
I've made (am still working on) a list of "things Joseph Smith would have had to know, had he written the book" if that interests anyone. I've written school papers on it. So count me in. I love this stuff.

Welcome to the forum white52black36

I was simply thinking of a verse by verse "study" with appropriate comments either for or against the content of the verses.

There is already several threads going about the BofM in regards to historical, archaelogical, Joseph as its "translator", etc...

I figured maybe we can look at what the BofM actually says.

All are welcomed under the 2-3 simple rules I posted in the OP.

Tom

Edit: Sounds like we have 3 takers.
When there are 5 or more I'll begin.
Additionally, if its only LDS posting and commenting the thread will be pretty boring and I would like some who disagree with the BofM to participate.

Mags you interested buddy?

This topic as far as I read the rules is legit, so I don't think we'll have any Mod. interuptions unless this thread gets out of hand. In that case I'll quit it myself.

I'm in, I always love talking about the Book of Mormon, and discussing factual and spiritual things. How about 2 Nephi 29? <grin> I have always liked that chapter.

Me too...I tried that one out on another thread and Magus said that I was "Multi-Versing". Which I can understand being very frustrating, because it gives strength to the truth, and is much hard to twist to your favor.

i'm sorry to say twhite, but i don't belive such a thing is allowed in the forum rules. I could be wrong.

I think you are wrong. This forum is to help others understand our beliefs. Twhite made it very clear his motives were not to promote our religion.

Hi there!

It was my proposal that there be a study on the bom, but since my initial contact with tom, I retracted my request.

And for one reason.

Until such time that the mormons on this forum decide their purpose here, a study is a bad suggestion.

There are only two mormons on this forum who will "discuss"... and that is tom and TOmNossor... the rest of you only use the forums to "bash" anything that moves.

You (Mormons) post mormon theology from copyrighted sites (the official site IS copyrighted).... and when a decent question is proposed in return, it is ignored, but when a "trash" question is posted, you break your necks to get your punches in.

I have come to believe that most of the Mormons aren't on this forum to share and learn... but instead, enjoy the "hunt"... support the "fighting"... and even egg it on.

Tom, that was why I told you that I wasn't interested any longer... There won't be discussion.... just mormon fussing ....

When members of the CoJCoLDS come to believe that they are capable of "discussion"... then it might be a different story... but as of today, this moment... I just read numerous postings... all bashings from mormons to people on this forum.

No... I'm not interesting in discussing your faith... it takes two to "discuss".

Rise above the hatred that is daily expressed here... You claim to be Christians... but I have yet to see you "turn the other cheek"... or respond in kindness... bitterness you got down pat.

Well I don't know about anyone else, but I AM here to promote my religion. So ban me if you want. I won't let the truth rest on my tongue, it will go forth among all nations through the mouths of all Latter-Day Saints. We are the true Church of Jesus Christ. We are the ONLY church with the authority to act in the name of God through the Priesthood. We perform baptisms for the dead so that those in spirit prison may be brought into the light and be taught the Everlasting Gospel that they might accept it. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints declares through witness of the Lord and his revelation to our prophet that Families are Eternal and those who do of the Lord's will shall recieve a mansion in the House of our Father and be exhaulted in the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom. It is through the Eternal Family that God is divine and exhaulted, it is through our process that was laid for us by our elder brother Jesus Christ, that someday we will come to know the same fruits of Eternal Life. We are the only Church with the ability to confirm the gift of the Holy Ghost upon those who have been found worthy and true to his keep. You cannot stop God's work, his glory from progressing. If you wish to disregard his word(all of them BOM included)then so be it. It is your life to worship as you see fit. But know that the day of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ is at hand. Like a thief in the night shall he descend upon his Kingdom. To be recieved in everlasting light. We as Mormons know these things to be true THROUGH CONFIRMATION OF THE SPIRIT. Our Prophet was truly called of God, and his council are as those of the 12 were in the Meridian of time. Truly special witness's unto Christ. I realize that most of you in here are decent people and only want to want to have a special relationship with your Father in Heaven and his Only Begotten Jesus Christ. And that is a commendable aspiration, but there is no denying the one true Faith of this world. THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS. I AM here to PROMOTE my religion. The Lord's house bows to no restriction or regulation that will inflict fallacy to reign as a chieftain among the masses. Lies will be hewn down by those wielding the sword of Valor and the Shield of Righteousness, we have the truth, and will continue to act accordingly to that truth by spreading the word. That no man be left without his daily bread.

I really don't think the mods would much go for a BOM study, but it may be interesting. Wouldn't it be hard to get a comprehensive picture of what is taught in TCoJCoLdS without considering the other books of Scripture, etc. since so much of LDS doctrine is extra-BOM?

Has the BOM movie been released yet?

I would love to be involved in a BOM study group. I belong to a Bible group and it is so fascinating. No one tries to convert anyone. We just learn what is being conveyed. This forum is a tough one because it is a bashing one and I agree that the people get a lot of fun from it. It's hard for me to have that "fun" because honestly, I don't know the BOM!
If you'd let me be a part, I'd just study along. Maybe we'd have to organize another group outside of this forum. Is anyone qualified to lead such a group? Quite honestly, to be a good Bible leader, you should really have put many years into not only studying the message, but also 1st Century history, customs and vernacular.

Yep, Gods leaving the wheat mixed in with the tares. Even those that THINK they do God a service. God will do me a service when he takes me out of the field, and burns the chaff. I think it will surprise you when you find out who the REAL church is. Its a church in this world, but not OF it. My God is not of ANY world. He doesnt force His church to marry in this life to get the highest exaltation. He actually says its better to OVERCOME our fleshly desires. He is the only God that WE or ANYTHING else, known or unknown, has to do with. He doesnt make us give silly handshakes, He doesnt give us worn-out secret names. He doesnt make us put our faith in "sacred underwear". God shall guide me. May Gods will be done.

Hi there!

THAT is not discussion... that is using this forum for your personal pulpit.

and thank you... you just proved my point... you were quick enough to slam those outside your denomination...

"We are the ONLY church".... how arrogant, how condescending, how unwilling to "discuss"... only another mormon "fussing"... and refusing to "discuss".

I vote NO to a study of the bom.

First, regarding copyrighted material, such MAY be quoted, by law, where a proper citation thereto is provided and it is clear what information is from the source copyrighted and what is not. Quoting entire articles is, however, discouraged.

Second, I am SHOCKED that you accuse the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints of bashing when they are outnumbered at least 3 to 1 and constantly trying to DEFEND their beliefs against brutal, relentless attacks from so called "Christians" on this site. Indeed, when you back something in the corner, which is what you and the others do, often, the poor cornered person will lash out in self-preservation. You and the others on here that engage in this behavior are to blame for this reaction as self-defense is human nature, and you should know this. This is YOUR website, as you often remind us. YOU set the tone, not us.

Third, you are not interested in discussing our faith for the pedantic purpose of discussion. You want to try and convert us to orthodox Christianity, and your rhetoric clearly shows this.

In sum, you, personally, project a disturbing misunderstanding of how you are perceived by us at best--and prove wholly disingenious at worst.

*shakes head in disbelief*
