  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's November 5th again. Across the UK and in some places around the world, people will be lighting bonfires and setting off loads of fireworks. I came home from work today and there are hundreds and thousands of fireworks all going off in different directions.

In years gone by, I used to go to a bonfire party once a year, where a warm fire would be lit, we would hold a sparkler and watch an organised firework display and eat a cooked jacket potato.

Is anyone here doing anything for Bonfire Night, or do you celebrate something similar?

Just make sure the owner closes the curtains and gives you a blanket to hide under! Maybe a bone to chew on so you can take your mind off the noise!

I hide under the stairs and put on my headphones and listen to 'Hound Dog' by Elvis!

I cannot be bothered with it anymore, however it is a British tradition. I think like many traditional festivals it's lost its meaning - do people still know what it is we're celebrating?
O yes, most definitely, we all knew the poem

It was a highlight of the year when I was growing up. It is not acknowledge in Australia. Fireworks are mostly banned here unless officially approved and by a licenced company. Much too dangerous for Australians. You know, the independent, strong, cavalier, anti authoritarian types. They only appear in movies and tourist ads. The rest get wrapped in state supplied cotton wool.
