  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My small group came upon an interesting topic that really puts things in perspective. We have several teens, a middle-aged man, and a 70ish year old man.

We were talking about the struggles we have in dealing with today's media and culture (I've been refering to it as "The Culture of Death") The old guy told us how the bar is constantly lowered, with Satan always trying to lower it more. What was once objectionable to most, is now accepted. And when many express their outrage about the worst fringes of a culture, they tend to overlook the small, but still objectionable actions that are right under their noses.

He told us a story about how he was at the movies with a bunch of GIs a few years after the war, and they had a commercial which depicted a field and flowers and the like, when the words "Tampax" came up. Many booed the screen and a few even left the theater. In stark contrast I was watching some cartoon the other day (pretty much the only thing I watch), and I hadnt realized that the commercial, until a few repeat airings of this commercial, was for "the pill," concentrating on "women's freedom to choose" thier pregnancies. ... During a Saturday morning cartoon? Not even 50 years ago, a group of GIs were outraged at a Tampax commercial, and yet to us it seems normal for a Birth Control pill ad to be on during children's cartoons (Im still at a loss for their target audience. I mean, sure I watch, but I cant imagine all that many girls of age watch the morning cartoons.)

The other guy, middle aged, mentioned how the shows he used to watch considered strong words like "pregnant" objectionable, and would instead use terms like "expecting" or "with child". (I forget the example he had, their all shows I never heard of.) And when the husband and wife would be seen in the bedroom, there would be two separate beds in the backround (so as not to give an innuendo to things after the lights were out  ) How much lower is our current television programs which blatantly expresses vulgarities for the sake of being vulgar.

Anyway, this post is basically a petition to readers to stand up for the faith against the Culture of Death, no matter how triffiling the matter may seem because Satan and his legions win small battles, a little at a time. We do not want objectional material to become an anthropological mores in our society. It only leads to greater sin.
