Oh dear, I'm afraid I may be resurfacing a controversial subject. I've not yet had the time to read through the entire thread, but this is something about which I feel very strongly....and the point may have already been made, so please forgive me if I am redundant.
In the interest of disclosure I should say that I have a few tattoos (although they are discreet) and have also had piercings (though I've since had them removed). It simply was not a spiritual issue for me, but I have a very professional job and such things are not appropriate in this environment.
I do not see a problem with piercings or tattoos, however many a person may have. I attend a more non-traditional church that is very scripturally strict but refuses to make a religion out of non-essentials and chooses to leave such things to personal conviction. Our church has a very "non-churchy" feel. As a result, it has reached a certain type of people who would otherwise be turned off by typical church traditions. I thank God that this type of church is here to fill this void.
We have so many people who are tattooed and pierced all over and it is a non-issue. In fact, it serves to further God's work. These people are able to reach people that I, or your typically ubiquitous White Anglo Saxon Protestant (or even Catholic) type of person, probably cannot reach. The response to God's message has been overwhelming. People feel welcome to come as they are and the issues being discussed are not about the appearance of their bodies but the sin in their hearts and their respective rerelationships with God. Which is the more important of the two, piercings and tattoos, or a soul that is desperately hurting due to a heart that is far from God and full of sin?
This wonderful and beautiful "differentness" in the body of Christ is what allows us to be all things to all men. The trivial issue of outward appearance is no longer a barrier and we can get down to the real "meat" of the issue with people to whom we are reaching out. Sure, our heavily pierced and tattooed brothers and sisters probably won't be able to reach a head honcho in Corporate America, but that is probably not their calling, anyway. There are more than enough "straight-laced" looking folks in the church to take up that cause.
It is sad for Christians to limit their ability to reach the lost by something so cursory as appearance. Now, I don't expect that Christians should walk around inappropriate clothing, particularly clothing that may make people struggle sexually (that's another discussion for another thread), but a piercing or a tattoo is truly a non-essential.
It takes ALL kinds of people to further God's Kingdom. Not just the kind that look like they go to church. People who are rarely exposed to anyone one truly different from themselves can afford to hold the view that a piercing or tattoo (or several) will hinder or cannot further God's Kingdom. But I think it's a pretty sheltered view and it is way off mark.
