  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Your favorite scientist, Darwin, wrote an excellent book on body language/facial expressions/emotions.

I found a review on it:

So why was this book rejected or ignored for a hundred years? Ekman offers five reasons. First, Darwin was convinced that animals had emotions and expressed them. This theory was dismissed as anthropomorphism. Second, as mentioned above, his data was anecdotal. A third reason is that Darwin, a man of his times, believed that acquired characteristics could be inherited, an idea long since discredited. The fourth is that Darwin studiously avoided the communicative value of expressions. One possible explanation is that he was steering clear of the idea, common in his day, that God had given humans special physical capabilities to form expressions. The last brings us right up to the current controversy over such ideas as sociobiology. In Darwin's day behaviorism ruled. People believed that we are completely products of our environment, and therefore that "equal opportunity would create men and women who were the same in all respects." Most scientists today agree that we are creatures of nature as well as nurture. Genetics, not culture, makes certain expressions universal.

Oh, you like 'em thin. Well, we aim to please, how about this girl here, is she thin enough for you?

Also, we can stretch her out to see how she would look thin.

I am trying to figure out what makes art, appealing to people. One person suggested that it has something to do with archtypes.

I think you need an artist to help you with this, John.
Platonic archetypes or Jungian archetypes?

I do not know to much about anything Platonic, other than in High School they use to talk about Platonic Relationships. I studied a little bit of Jung, but that was a long time ago, before I became a Christian.

.no offense but she doesnt look like model material...she doesnt have "the look" and her face is kinda round, plain and featureless, now if she lost 25 pounds to bring out the bone structure in her face, she would look better, but would probably also cause her health problems..but what do I know...nothing except what looks good too me.

For goodness' sake man. :(

I would not worry about ReUsAbLePhEoNiX too much. She was baby sitting some kids and had spent most of the afternoon out playing in the sand on the beach. When I said lets go shoot some photos, she said sure. She brushed the sand out of her hair and she was ready to go. I have a lot of respect for a women like that.

The kind of "look" he is talking about is fake. It all has to do with make up, lighting and using the right exposure. That is fine if that is what we were working on, but we were working on something different than that.

No doubt, a good make up artist can make over $100,000 a year. But it only lasts so long, then you have to wash it all off and then what? That is why you have to have photography, to try and capture that moment and make it last a little but longer.

I took someones photo once, then I removed the memory card from my camera and asked them: "What do you think will last longer, you or the photo image"? He said he thought the photo would out live him.

I think she is a cute girl. I hope she makes it to med. school! :) I am not sure how tall she is, but I think most models are over 6'-0" and something crazy like 120?? I saw a "supermodel" in person once (Linda Evangilista-early 1991 or 1992?) and rememeber thinking she looked very ill. She was with some other VERY tall ( all around 6'-2" or 6'-3") and EXTREMELY thin women, but I could not place them by name. Remeber the camera adds 10 pounds (or so they say) in real life some of these women look like walking skeletons:eek:. Once a women becomes too thin they stop their monthly cycle, therefore, are unable to produce children (not that it is good bad or indifferent) but nature seems to take care of itself. These girls could damage their health that is for sure. Anyway John, I like the pictures I think you have a talent. (I wish I did..I take horrible pictures!!...people get ticked off once I get my film devolped...so my husband uses the nice camera and I am happy using disposables :) )

Guys don't like it too much, but girls love celebreties that go for a non-****ty look. I think the best feature about Stacie Orrico is that she maintains her beauty no matter what she's wearing. Girls (especially the young ones) are huge fans of Stacie and how she decides what to wear. The natural beauty is much more valuable, in my opinion, because then she looks lovely in the morning light while she sleeps. To those who want it: Pray for it. Beauty will certainly come to those who can control it.

She is not trying to be a super model. She just wants to get up to where she can make $150 an hour. That sort of pay is not that uncommon for modeling. Right now, if someone offered her $10 an hour, she would be happy to have the money. It's better than the $6 an hour they are paying her to babysit.

Anyway John, I like the pictures I think you have a talent. (I wish I did..I take horrible pictures!!...people get ticked off once I get my film devolped...so my husband uses the nice camera and I am happy using disposables :) )
Thanks, I think photography is like gardening or most anything else in life. You have to want to do it enough to learn how to do it. Taking a good photo is actually not that difficult. Most cameras are set up to take a photo at a distance of 8 to 10 feet. The max. range is 6 to 12 feet. Just center the lens on the subject and push the button half way. This will allow the camera to make all the adjustments and it will lock those adjustments. Then when everything looks the way you want it, take in a breath, hold the camera steady and smoothly push the button. The biggest problem people have is the camera is moving and so the picture is blured and not in focus.

To really study it though, you have to go back 2500 years and study the Greeks. They were the first to understand perspective, color, lighting and how to pose people. Also with my years of work as a carpenter, I can do the geometry and the math really fast in my head to figure out all the right angles to set the photo up. But the complicated stuff on how much to open the lens and how long to open the lens is pretty much automatic. The camera figures out that for you.

Also I use a digital camera and I have enough memory I can take up to 300 photos. So there has to be some good ones in there somewhere. I would be happy if one in fifty came out really good. I can shoot 50 or 60 photos in a half hour. People usually do not want to look at bunches of photos though, they just want to see a few good ones. Esp. here were there is so much text and people like to see a photo every now and than.

I do know people who do just that. They believe that God will renew our youth and keep us looking and feeling young.

Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

People ask me that all the time, there are so many myths and misconceptions regarding that, and I have found that the people who have never been and have never applied, claim to know the most about it. When people find out I am in Med. School they say, "Oh, so you must have had a 4.0"...no, I did not. My undergrad GPA was 3.64. I would say that you do not want to get under a 3.0 and above 3.3 would be best. I
can give you/her a few pointers and go-bys. There is a lot of myth about what a person needs to get into Medical School. Most people think you need a 4.0 to get in but that is simply not true. First she will need to get her undergrad degree. Mine happens to be in Biology but she can get it in anything. The people I go to school with have VERY diverse backgrounds and education. One of my close friends has a History Degree and another has a Music degree and another has a degree in Engineering. However, you have to ALSO meet the core requirement classes, those are what they call the "Pre-Med classes". These classes are listed at the bottom of the page as you open this link. The link I provided is what I went by as a "go by" when I decided to do this. This link is for Texas Medical Schools but the core reqirments (Pre-Med. classes) do not change much, if at all, from state to state. I did have one friend that had a 4.0 undergrad and was rejected from three different Medical schools. The one he wanted to go to he applied to FOUR times and was rejected and got in the fifth time. It is not all grades, like most people think. (although I will say it is highly competitive to get in but there are many factors.) My entry class had GPA's ranging from 2.999 to 4.0 . I would say the M-CAT is the leveler. The person that had the 2.999, I imagine, did well on the M-CAT.
The M-CAT covers Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math plus reading comprehension etc.

Another big factor is the interview. I applied to 3 different Med. Schools and was accepted to 2 of them (the 3rd I was trying to get into a school to do a MD/PhD. at the same time but was not accepted.) The interview weighs pretty heavy. At my school the people in admissions have the philosophy that if you cannot establish rapport with them in 30 minutes what reason would they have to believe you could establish rapport with a patient in 15 minutes, which is the average length of an office visit with a physician. I would also recommend taking Anatomy and Physiolgy before going to Med. School, it is not a requirement for Pre-Med. but makes it easier when you are there. I would also highly recommend Biochemistry before as well, I took in undergrad. Some people have not had much of it. That is the first thing you get into first year and the material assumes prior knowledge of Biochemistry. The link is full of good information. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Yes, I know another girl (not from Med. School) who is an actress. She is by no means famous but makes decent money doing commercials, instructional videos and as an "extra". I guess you friend should have some "head shots" taken? My friend, Alex is always talking about getting her head shots out to different agencies, I guess that is a foot in the door??...not sure.

Yup, that is me -blurred pictures. Or, if they are not blurred thay are just crappy. That is a talent, one I do not have.

Yes, maybe some day..do not have too much free time these days. Getting online with you guys and chatting is about the extent of my free time, for the time being. There is many things I would like to study once I have more time. Space is my passion, when I get free time I like to read about space and the Universe. I really like AstroPhysics. I would have loved to have been an Astrophysicist but was never quite good enough or fast enough at the calculations. Some of those people are incredible! I took a couple of course in undergrad. Some of the people had the solutions so fast! I was still punching in my formula and they were finished! I really enjoy it but I know my limitations.

Also I use a digital camera and I have enough memory I can take up to 300 photos. So there has to be some good ones in there somewhere. I would be happy if one in fifty came out really good. There is a REALLY nice camera that I looked at not too long ago. It is a Hewlett Packard (do not know the model number) this camera has a small printer with it. It prints 3-1/2 x 5 photolab quality pictures. You can take the printer with you anywhere. The camera downloads the pictures to the printer. For the camera printer and I think charger was 750? Have you seen this?

My brother and my dad both got into John Hopkins with a C in Chemistry. At first my brother applied to Ohio State, but they told him to take Chemistry over again and raise his grade to at least a B, then reapply.

He had to work really hard in Medical school. I was going to a school in Conn. and took the train down once to visit him. It was suppose to be a break and even a lot of the students had gone home. But he did not stop. He studied his books the whole time I was there. The only break he took was to go out and get a pizza.

Yes, I know another girl (not from Med. School) who is an actress. She is by no means famous but makes decent money doing commercials, instructional videos and as an "extra". I guess you friend should have some "head shots" taken?
Actually, I was going to try to push her in the direction of "instruction videos" or some kind of spokes person. I really can not see her out on a runway or in a beauty contest :) She is not tall enough. As you mentioned, I would like to see her establish a working relationship with people in 15 min or less, and perhaps they would see some potential in her as a representive. I think that is what could get her into medical school. It is not like they really have a finishing school for young women now a days. Modeling is about the only area a lot of this stuff is still taught and remembered. It is to bad so much of it is being used for garbage, but at least the teaching is being preserved even if it is by perverted photographers.

Look at Britney Spears, they did a wonderful job to promote her. But they destroyed her in the process. I heard they even got her started on drugs. They started out with a rather sweet, innocent girl with talent and they ruined her in the process of promoting her. Last I heard they had Britney working with Madonna, pulling cheap promotion stunts. Madonna was another girl they did a woderful job to promote. Only Madonna they pulled out of the gutter.

I am attending a Sunday School teachers class, and the girls who teach sunday school are a whole lot different then the girls you see out in the world. I want to show our young people a proper example of what a young person is suppose to be. I want to use photography and video's to help build a person confidence, but also to present the right sort of image.

I took a couple of course in undergrad. Some of the people had the solutions so fast! I was still punching in my formula and they were finished!
My brain works like that when I am setting up a photo. It works all the angles and runs all the math almost lighting fast. Of course when I was doing construction I use to study it and study it, but now I can do it real fast.

There is a REALLY nice camera that I looked at not too long ago. It is a Hewlett Packard (do not know the model number) this camera has a small printer with it. Hewlett Packard is a computer- printer company. If it were me I would buy a camera from a camera company. Like they use to say, but paint at a paint store not a hardware store. I like Olympus, but I am sure Nikon, Canon and some of the others make a good camera. It has a lot to do with the lens. They could not sell a Hewlett Pakard based on the quality of the photos, so they have to come up with a gimmick. Actualy, Kodak is the same, they have to use gimmicks to sell their camera's. But I am sure it would be nice to print out a photo wherever you go also.

Before you buy a camera that hooks up to a printer like that, check and see what the ink and the paper are going to cost you. For me I would rather take my memory card and put it in a flash reader and look at the photos on the computer. Then I can deleat the ones I do not want and take the memory card up to Target and for 29 cents a print they will print them out for me using waterproof ink on Kodak photography paper. So I do not have to worry about them getting wet. Even I can crop the photos before I get them printed out at the Target store. It is sort of fun, as long as you do not get real involved with them to spend a lot of time trying to fix them.

It is nice to be able to print them out at home and have instant photos. So, sometimes I do print them out myself. But I take them into a greeting card program and put the photos on a 8 1/2 by 11 photo paper. I will put either 4 or 6 photos on a page. Then we put them in a plastic folder and into a regular notebook binder, to show to people.

John-You have a beautiful family. :)
Thanks, I have to spend a lot of time in prayer sometimes, asking God for His help when people get moody. But I think it is all worth the while. I lived alone for 5 years once, and I would not ever want to do that again. I can spend a lot of time alone, but I like people to much not to want to get out around them some of the time. It is not good to spend all of our time alone.

For me God is a miracle working God. He can do things in our life to help us that we just can not do on our own without Him. It is kinda a trade off, because when I go to God for help, then He shows me the what sort of person He wants me to be, and He shows me what He wants me to be doing, and that if fine. Life just goes a lot easier that way. When we follow His plan for us, then He takes full responsablity to see to it that everything works out ok for us, so we do not have to worry about anything.
